A weekend invested in skills. A step toward better employment.

Nineteen students participated in Frank Lee’s first ISTC weekend workshop—and every student passed the NCCER Core basic safety assessment! 👏

This new workshop series expands training opportunities to help students build qualifications for better jobs through work release and prepare for employment after release.

Understanding workplace hazards and safe work practices helps students prepare for expectations in construction, warehousing and other industrial workplaces. These foundational skills can broaden their employment options and support continued training and career advancement.

Developed with facility leadership, the series responds to employment needs, including anticipated warehouse opportunities.

Successful reentry takes preparation, opportunity and a strong support system.

Last week, members of the ISTC Reentry team and college leadership attended the Shepherds Fold annual luncheon to celebrate our partner’s work supporting men returning to their communities after incarceration.

Shepherds Fold is a faith-based organization that provides transitional housing, employment assistance, transportation and other services for men leaving Alabama’s prison system.

For ISTC students, these resources can help connect classroom preparation with career success. Stable housing, reliable transportation and ongoing support help students overcome barriers, put their skills to work and build independence.

❓ What can working with refrigerants without EPA certification cost?

Violating federal refrigerant certification requirements can lead to civil penalties of up to $124,426 per day, per violation in federal court. Actual penalties depend on the circumstances.

Mr. Patterson’s HVAC students have taken an important step toward doing the job safely and correctly: They passed their EPA Section 608 exam and are now certified! 👏🔧

This certification qualifies students to perform refrigerant work covered by their certification type, strengthening their preparation for careers servicing air conditioning and refrigeration systems. Plus, this credential does not expire!

Alabama projects approximately 700 HVAC job openings annually from 2024 to 2034. Nationwide, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects approximately 40,600 openings annually from 2025 to 2035.

🤝 Connections today can help students prepare for life after release.

J.F. Ingram State Technical College’s Draper Resource Fair on September 23 connected 135 students with nearly 30 participating organizations to learn about resources and opportunities available after incarceration.

Students left encouraged by the conversations and connections they made. Knowing where to turn for support before returning home can help students prepare, address challenges and move forward with greater confidence.

Resource fairs serve current ISTC students and graduates who are within one year of their release or parole consideration date. These events emphasize community resources and release preparation, while job fairs held in partnership with the Alabama Bureau of Pardons and Paroles emphasize employment. Both connect participants with services and job opportunities, with each event tailored to the needs of those we serve.

🎓 Congratulations to the 45 graduates of Cohort 15 at the Perry County PREP Center!

J.F. Ingram State Technical College joined the Alabama Bureau of Pardons and Paroles (ABPP) on Friday, Oct. 2, to celebrate the graduates’ accomplishments and the work they put into preparing for their next chapter.

Through ISTC’s partnership with ABPP, participants receive education and hands-on workforce training that help prepare them for employment. This cohort earned credentials in workplace safety, flooring, logistics, food service and heavy equipment operation. Two participants also earned Class A commercial driver’s licenses! 🚛

📚 We’re especially proud of Participants David and Devan, who completed their GEDs during their time at PREP. Reentry Director Kelly Emfinger served as the graduation speaker, and Toby Killcreas helped recognize these two graduates.

The skills and credentials earned at PREP give graduates more tools to pursue employment, support their families and build stable futures.

Congratulations to Delicia Anderson on receiving her five-year service pin from J.F. Ingram State Technical College!

As an adult education instructor, Ms. Anderson brings a fun, uplifting personality and genuine enthusiasm into the classroom. Her energy helps participants rebuild their confidence, rediscover the joy of learning and recognize that it is never too late to achieve an educational goal.

While serving through the Thomasville Day Reporting Center, Ms. Anderson primarily assists participants at the Perry County PREP Center. There, she helps individuals prepare for and earn a GED before returning to their communities. This achievement can open doors to employment, career training and continued education while providing a stronger foundation for successful reentry.

Ms. Anderson’s impact extends far beyond helping someone pass a test. She helps participants see new possibilities for themselves and take an important step toward a more stable future.

🎓 Congratulations to the Opelika Day Reporting Center graduates!

Dr. Calloway, Job Placement Coordinator at J.F. Ingram State Technical College (ISTC), served as the commencement speaker at today’s graduation ceremony, recognizing the graduates’ hard work and encouraging them as they take their next steps.

Through our partnership with the Alabama Bureau of Pardons and Paroles (ABPP), individuals who report to ABPP Day Reporting Centers are eligible for short-term skills training and adult education services through ISTC. Our job placement team also helps connect individuals with employers so they can put their training to work.

We are proud to partner with ABPP to help individuals gain skills, find employment and build a stronger future for themselves and their families. 💙

Ingram State Technical College is proud to celebrate Angelica for earning her Alabama High School Diploma through the High School Diploma Option (HSDO) Program!

Through HSDO, Alabama Adult Education provides eligible individuals with an alternative pathway to complete high school graduation requirements and earn a diploma issued by their former high school. For Angelica, that meant completing her journey and receiving her diploma from Demopolis High School.

This milestone represents hard work, determination and another step toward new opportunities in education, employment and beyond.

Supporting Our Partners at ADOC 🐾

Ingram State President David Walters was proud to join our partners at the Alabama Department of Corrections today for the ADOC K9 Competition at Lake Martin.

Hosted by ADOC’s Law Enforcement Services Division (LESD), the event brought together K9 teams from across the department to demonstrate the training, skill and teamwork behind their work. 🐕‍🦺

Ingram State students helped add a special touch to this year’s competition by creating custom coaster giveaways for each participant featuring the K9s entered in the event. It was a great opportunity for our students to put their skills to work while creating something meaningful for our ADOC partners. 🐾

President Walters enjoyed spending the day with our friends and partners at ADOC and showing Ingram State’s continued support for the people who serve across the department.

We value the partnerships that make our work possible — and we’re always proud when our students can be part of them. 👏

They learned how to recognize workplace hazards and follow safe work practices. Their OSHA 10 cards are a valuable addition to their résumés as they continue their training and prepare for employment.
