Each webinar features one or more contributors to the open-access book Sustaining Ministry Education: Cultivating the Ecotone of Lifelong Learning, edited by Darryl W. Stephens, forthcoming from Atla Open Press, September 2026.

Located at the confluence of church, society, and academy, lifelong learning is an “ecotone,” a transitional space with its own distinct ecology. In this webinar series, directors of programs, theological educators, and theological librarians share research and best practices to promote a healthy ecotone focused on discovery, innovation, nurture, and sustainability.

“Pause before saying yes to any requests.”

I was asked to be on a board. I was tempted to say yes. I was flattered to be asked.

But when I thought it through, I decided it wasn’t the best use of my time. I appreciate the work of that organization. Yet it wasn’t a fit for what I’m up to now.

A sub-rule is, a flattering request is never a good enough reason to say yes! I love it when people love me and my work, but that can be a trap for something I don’t really want to do.

What do you want? You'll become a better pastor the more you lead from your deepest self. Don't shape yourself to your congregation's wants.
