Somehow October has arrived, but let's take a minute to look back at a fun moment from September! 📚

Students in LDR-101: Democracy and Its Critics in Ancient Greece went on a scavenger hunt in McCain Library, Agnes Scott College to learn the library inside and out, getting ready for their coursework on ancient Greek democracy. 🏛️ A huge thank you to Casey Long for setting this up for us!

So proud of our Classics major, Reese Cleveland, who recently completed the American School of Classical Studies at Athens' seminar, "Landscape with Figures: Human-Environment Interaction in Premodern Greece." Reese gave a site report on the Sacred Spring at Corinth for a group of fellow students and scholars — talk about learning to think on your feet in the field!

Since arriving, Reese has explored Crete, Santorini, and Athens, taking in sites like Knossos, Gortyn, Akrotiri, ancient Thera, Nemea, and Athens. A definite career highlight so far: getting to handle Heinrich Schliemann's original excavation notebooks from Troy and Mycenae during a rare-book session at the American School's Gennadius Library.

We love seeing our Scotties fall in love with the ancient world firsthand. Safe travels, Reese — can't wait to hear more when you're back on campus!

🎓✨ Celebrating Our Graduating Seniors! ✨🎓
It's that time of year, and we couldn't be prouder of the incredible group of students we're sending out into the world. This cohort has been exceptional — and the places they're headed prove it.
🩺 Katherine Cox is heading to Duke University to pursue a PhD in Occupational Therapy. We always knew she was going places — turns out it's to one of the best programs in the country!
🗣️ Anna Hillesheim will be taking her love of the Latin language to UNC Chapel Hill for a fully funded M.A. in Linguistics. Woo!
💻 Mia McCown is heading to UT Knoxville for an M.S. in Information Sciences. Vol for life AND a classicist — she contains multitudes.
🌏 Hannah Porch is applying her ASC global training in Japan, where she'll serve as an Assistant Language Teacher through the JET Program. Itterasshai, Hannah!
🏛️ Emma Magnus is returning to Portugal to continue excavating a Roman Villa. Yes, you read that right — she's literally digging up history.
👏 Claire Lewis is pursuing a career in public history and bringing her historical and classical training to life - we are so proud of you and can't wait to see where the road takes you next!

🏆 And the awards go to…
🥇 Awards in Latin — Congratulations to Anna Hillesheim and Mia McCown!
🏅 Classics Achievement Award — Rhyenne Jenkins
✈️ Travel Awards — Emma Magnus, Claire Lewis, Courtney Chaplin, and Reese Cleveland have ventured to (or soon will be traveling to) Classical Lands with our department's support. Adventure awaits!

We are so grateful for every one of these students — for their curiosity, their dedication, and the way they made our classrooms come alive. Congratulations to the Class of 2026! We'll miss you. Now go do great things. 🌟

Dear All,
We are saddened to inform you that the college administration is moving to "sunset" the Classics Department permanently. This means that some courses will still be offered - and maybe even a Minor - but that there will be no permanent faculty, no new Majors, no institutional support for Classics. The faculty will vote on this decision as early as the end of this week! In the meantime, we share here the link to a student-created petition to save Classics (and several other liberal arts programs that are in danger of being cut in the near future). Will you sign it? Please consider leaving us a comment as well, one that speaks to your experience with Classics (generally) and how you think it is relevant in today's changing world.

Continuing our wistful look back to Summer 2025: Scottie junior Courtney Chaplin participated in the Harvard Summer Program in Greece ( ). This year's course, "Political and Natural Environments of the Eastern Mediterranean from Antiquity to the Present - Comparative Cultural Approaches," covered a massive swath of Mediterranean history. Courtney was able to visit major archaeological sites throughout the country, utilize Harvard's research facility in Nafplion, interact with leading scholars in the field of Classics, and participate in thought-provoking seminars led by Harvard faculty. We're super stoked that Courtney was able to represent Agnes Scott on this incredible journey and we can't wait to see where her studies lead her next!
