Some of the biggest medical breakthroughs begin by answering a simple question: Why does this molecule behave the way it does?

This summer, Dr. Sarah Mitchell and her STEM Scholars research team, Laura D. ’28, Sade I. ’28, Wynona J. ’28, Elycia C. '29 and Rayanna H. ’29, investigated an enzyme called inosine monophosphate dehydrogenase (IMPDH), a protein that plays a critical role in producing the nucleotides our cells need to build DNA and RNA and generate energy. While scientists have known for years that IMPDH binds to RNA, one important question has remained unanswered: Why? The team is working to better understand how the enzyme interacts with messenger RNA and whether those interactions influence protein production, research that could deepen our understanding of diseases including certain inherited forms of blindness and cancers.

Throughout the summer, the scholars learned techniques ranging from molecular biology and genetics to data analysis, while discovering that research rarely goes exactly as planned. Instead, progress comes through asking questions, testing ideas, learning from mistakes and trying again. Several students reflected that the supportive lab environment gave them the confidence to tackle concepts they had never encountered in the classroom and reminded them that growth often begins outside their comfort zone.

Whether they're studying enzymes, ecosystems or equations, Agnes Scott students are building the curiosity and confidence to tackle tomorrow's scientific challenges.

We have exciting news!!! Agnes Scott College is launching a new physician assistant program this fall, with 30 students starting their 24-month Master of Medical Science program in October.

The journey begins in the newly renovated Hopkins Hall, where students will develop their clinical skills through immersive classroom and lab experiences. In year two, they'll expand that learning through clinical rotations that prepare them for practice.

Upon completion, students will earn 102 graduate credit hours while gaining extensive clinical experience across specialties including community health, women’s health, pediatrics, emergency medicine, hospital medicine, surgical medicine and behavioral medicine.

The program is designed to help address Georgia's growing need for healthcare providers, expanding access to high-quality, patient-centered care in communities across the state.

The next generation of physician assistants will leave Agnes Scott prepared to lead with compassion, serve diverse communities and make a meaningful impact in healthcare across greater Atlanta and the world beyond campus.

Here's to 80 years of memories, meaningful service and a legacy that will continue to inspire future generations of Scotties.

This summer, the Agnes Scott community gathered to celebrate the 80th birthdays of Gué Pardue Hudson '68, dean of students emerita, Bill Hudson, Ann Glendinning '68, Agnes Scott trustee emerita, and Dale Kelly.

The incredible turnout, including three current and former presidents of Agnes Scott, was a testament to the deep connections that shape our community of Scotties. Their collective legacy continues to be felt across campus and beyond.

Happy 80th birthday to these remarkable members of the Scottiehood, and thank you for the countless ways our presidents helped make Agnes Scott what it is today.

Fire ants might not be everyone's favorite subject, but that's exactly what makes this research so important.

This summer, Dr. Jennifer Kovacs '02 and her team of STEM Scholars, Adynn J-W. '29, Ellie C. '29, Hayley P. '28 and Tenley G. '28, have been investigating how invasive fire ant colonies spread across Georgia, using fieldwork, DNA analysis and mapping technology to answer questions scientists haven't revisited in decades.

The team is studying the genetics behind polygynous fire ant colonies, which contain multiple queens instead of the single queen found in most ant colonies. These multi-queen colonies can grow much larger and spread more rapidly, making them especially successful as an invasive species. By collecting ant samples from Agnes Scott's campus and sites across Georgia, then analyzing their DNA in the lab, the researchers hope to identify where single-queen colonies transition to multi-queen colonies and better understand how those populations are changing over time. They're also beginning to investigate hybridization between Georgia's red fire ants and the black fire ants found farther north, adding another layer to a project that could improve our understanding of invasive species management.

For the scholars, the experience has been just as meaningful as the findings. Throughout the summer, they've gained hands-on experience conducting field research, extracting DNA, running molecular analyses, mapping colonies with GIS technology and collaborating with researchers across disciplines. More importantly, they're contributing to a growing body of scientific knowledge while discovering how curiosity, teamwork and diverse perspectives drive meaningful research.
