When James Millikin founded the university more than 110 years ago, he did so based upon the idea of combining theory and practice. While this was a radical idea at the time, today, we know that practice is not enough. Today's students must perform their knowledge in order to be truly prepared for life after college. Market research. You name it; our students are finding new ways to live out their

learning and reap the rewards of their hard work. The result – Millikin students graduate with experience and the confidence to succeed. In 2015, 99% of our students went on to find jobs or pursued a graduate degree within six months of graduation. Today, June 19, Millikin University is closed in celebration of Juneteenth. With a rich history of Black excellence on our campus, we proudly observe the significance of this day.

Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. Specifically, June 19, 1865, marks the moment when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, with news of freedom — two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

As we celebrate Juneteenth, Millikin honors the enduring pursuit of equity and justice.

Millikin University has received a transformational $3.3 million estate gift from the trust of Helen Cox Kersting ’56 to establish the Helen Cox Kersting and Dr. Hans-Joachim Kersting Scholarship Fund. The gift, the largest scholarship commitment in the history of the College of Fine Arts, will create new opportunities for School of Music students for years to come.

At Millikin, Audrey Soetermans carved out a path uniquely her own — one defined by exploration, artistic growth, and a deep commitment to storytelling through music.

A Big Blue legacy student, Audrey first arrived as a Music Business major with a focus on viola, but quickly found her interests evolving. She transitioned into Commercial Music and Voice, while continuing to expand her skills with the violin, electric violin, drums, and piano.

🎵🎤 Composition became one of the most defining aspects of Audrey’s MU journey. Today, her work blends pop, alternative, and classical influences, reflecting a wide-ranging and evolving creative identity.

Congratulations to Tom Friend, Assistant Director of Public Safety, for graduating from the Police Training Institute!

Friend recently completed the Police Academy, becoming a certified law enforcement officer in the state of Illinois. He was also recognized as one of the top academic performers in his class.

The achievement marks an important milestone for Millikin Public Safety.

For Mark Tonelli, music has always been about connection — but his latest project takes that idea across continents, cultures, and artistic mediums.

Tonelli, Millikin Associate Professor of Music and Coordinator of Guitar Studies, has released “Brasiliana,” a new album inspired by his extensive travels in Brazil. Alongside the album comes an unexpected companion piece: a feature-length film. 🎬 🇧🇷 🎸

A Brazilian filmmaker, Thiago S. Barbosa, became interested in Tonelli’s story and produced “Brasiliana – The Film.” The film not only explores Tonelli’s time in Brazil but also brings the story back to Decatur — highlighting how those experiences are now shaping his work at Millikin.
