Today, June 19, Millikin University is closed in celebration of Juneteenth. With a rich history of Black excellence on our campus, we proudly observe the significance of this day.
Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. Specifically, June 19, 1865, marks the moment when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, with news of freedom โ two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation.
As we celebrate Juneteenth, Millikin honors the enduring pursuit of equity and justice.
