Yesterday, Joan M. Phillips-Hernandez, our College of Business dean, had the opportunity to join a panel at Armanino’s Chicago office for “Ready or Not: Gain the AI Advantage Before Your Rivals Do.”

The conversation brought together a variety of perspectives on AI in business, and panelists talked about how AI is changing the nature of work and the roles people play within their organizations.

The dean spoke about our college's initiatives to give our students meaningful opportunities to experience and work with AI in the classroom. Each day, we prepare students to identify and understand business problems, collaborate to solve them, and work effectively in a world where some of their colleagues may be AI agents. That will require students to learn how to manage AI-assisted work, exercise sound judgment and, ultimately, remain accountable for the outcomes.

Earlier last month, students from our One-Year MBA Chicago cohort heard from Mike Zoller, a sales team lead at Chicago-based Sprout Social, Inc. The trip focused on learning practical AI thinking in order to do a job better and build on your strengths.

Zoller shared that his teams use AI tools to pick the 10 accounts to reach out to each day out of perhaps 800 in a book of business while also discussing the importance of AI review with every task.

For Venus Dorantes, an internship was more than a résumé builder — it was a chance to put classroom knowledge into practice and experience her field firsthand.

Dorantes is a senior studying business administration in our NIU College of Business with a dual emphasis in marketing and data analytics. This summer, she gained hands-on experience through her operations internship with Paylocity, which helped strengthen her interest in consulting and project management.
