How has your education at UNT helped in your career? “It helped me prepare for a PhD in my field (Economics) and to experience the life of a grad student. UNT provided me with a sense of community far away from home. I also found mentors at UNT (Dr. Margie Tieslay) who has helped in every step of my journey in the U.S.” - Farah

Congratulations to Ian Finseth who was awarded the Fulbright Scholar Program to Slovenia (2026-2027)!

“While in Slovenia on a Fulbright scholarship, I look forward to collaborating with new colleagues, becoming immersed in a different culture, and — most importantly — helping my students there understand some of the deep historical forces and long-term patterns of American literature and culture. At the same time, I hope to have my own eyes opened and my own horizons expanded through the students’ unique perspective on the United States. Building this kind of cross-cultural understanding, I believe, has never been more important than in our current era of both globalization and the backlash to globalization.” - Ian Finseth

"My education at UNT connected rigorous coursework with real projects. Faculty mentorship and research opportunities sharpened my writing, analysis, and presentation skills; GSTEP training improved my teaching; and leadership with the Saudi Student Association strengthened my communication and teamwork. Together, these experiences prepared me to contribute in academic, media, and community settings.

One of my proudest accomplishments at UNT was completing my doctoral dissertation titled: “A Mixed-Methods Longitudinal Analysis of Differences in Framing and the Impact on U.S. Newspaper Coverage of Saudi Vision 2030 (2016–2024).”

During my time at UNT, I also had the honor of serving as President of the Saudi Student Association and working as a Graduate Teaching Assistant in both the College of Information and the Mayborne School of Journalism. These experiences helped me grow academically, professionally, and personally.

For advice to new students, I would say:
Be open to every opportunity. Some of the most meaningful experiences at UNT happen outside the classroom—through research, leadership, teaching, and the people you meet along the way."

- Ziyad, graduated with M.A. in Journalism and recently completed his Ph.D. in Information Science (Journalism Concentration) at UNT, with research focused on media framing, international news coverage, and communication research related to Saudi Vision 2030.

Congratulations to Amaris Charles for being awarded the Fulbright U.S. Student Program English Teaching Assistantship to Thailand (2026-2027)!

"I hope to use my time in the Fulbright ETA program to help students build confidence in their English skills while engaging with the community through active participation and cultural exchange. I am excited to be part of this program because it aligns with my passion for global engagement, anthropology, and education, and I know my time in Thailand will have an impact on my future as a more culturally aware physician." - Amaris Charles

Culture Shock:

"The school system is very different, the level of engagement is very different. Schools here let you be involved outside of the classroom. Which is not common in Italy.'

Accomplishments:

"I got to host a Discover Italy event last year and it was a great opportunity and to share the hidden gems of Italy was a lot of fun. I also worked as an ISSS student worker for 3 years and made a lot of friends. I tried to be involved as much as possible. I was involved int he UNT sweethearts and the Biomedical Engineering Society and I was the president of the Biomedical engineering society."

How did you deal with homesickness when first moving here?

"I came from a very tiny small town, which is similar to a lot of international students. But by getting involved. I was working through CPT and was able to get an internship and graduated with Latin Honors and as a member of the honors college. I gained so much confidence in my ability to succeed."

Advice:

"Even though I came here you are very lost and alone and don't know how you'll do it. , it gets better if you have the drive for it. At the beginning you struggle with homesickness and if you let it get you down, you'll regret it. But by making the most out of the situation, you'll overcome the drawbacks that you have. And you can look back and say I gave it my all. Line dancing is so much fun and I was able to find my group of people. Try, try try don't give up and do your best, and get involved as much as possible so you can look back and feel joy."

"If I could go back to my student days, I would do everything possible to attend more conferences and put myself in the right rooms. I’d actively connect with people in the industry and wouldn’t hesitate to reach out to those ahead of me, even if it felt intimidating. I would be intentional 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐮𝐩. Because it’s not just about networking, it’s about the personal growth that comes from being exposed to new people, new ideas, and new perspectives.

My education at the University of North Texas helped me build a strong foundation in both technical and functional areas. UNT trained me to think outside the box, approach problems from different angles, stay curious about learning new things, and solve challenges systematically and efficiently. That mindset is exactly what I rely on every day in AI and data projects. The technical skills I learned translated directly into my work. Courses in data science, machine learning, and research methods gave me a solid foundation that continues to support me today. Although continuous upskilling is always necessary in technology, the fundamental ability to learn new tools and techniques has consistently helped me adapt across projects — from machine learning modeling and web development to engineering Generative AI and Agentic AI systems.

UNT also exposed me to multidisciplinary teams, presentations, teaching, and collaboration with diverse groups of students and faculty. Those experiences made me comfortable communicating complex technical ideas clearly to different audiences, which is essential in consulting and leadership roles. Most importantly, UNT encouraged exploration — trying new tools, experimenting, and learning independently. That mindset has helped me stay current in fast-moving fields like AI and pivot quickly as technologies and project needs evolve. "
