Students in Professor Hoda Emam’s JOUR 3343 Visual News Storytelling class welcomed Claire Williams, Director of Content at the Denton Record-Chronicle, as a guest speaker.

Williams shared insights into the newspaper’s current video strategy and its partnership with KERA, giving students a closer look at how local news organizations are adapting to digital storytelling.

Students also had the opportunity to pitch their upcoming video news assignments and explore stories that could be of interest to the Denton Record-Chronicle.

On September 30, UNT SPJ President and Mayborn graduate student Juan Carlos Ramirez traveled to Columbus, Ohio, to attend and cover the 2026 Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) National Conference.

Ramirez reported on important topics shaping the future of journalism, including journalism education, career development, headline writing, artificial intelligence in newsrooms, and the evolving media landscape.

Ramirez also wrote a feature on outgoing SPJ President Chris Vaccaro.

Students in Adjunct Professor Matthew Farmer’s JOUR 5750 Multimedia Storytelling class welcomed Eliza Gray, founder and lead reporter of , an independent local news publication.

Gray shared insights on the art and ethics of creating short-form journalism for Reels and social media, helping students explore how to tell engaging stories while maintaining journalistic standards.

Students will put what they learned into practice by producing their own short-form videos highlighting local stories in Denton!
