Thank you to everyone who joined us for First Flight Week: College Day on August 12!

It was wonderful welcoming our newest COI students to the Mean Green family! Students kicked off their UNT journey with a pep talk from Dean Kinshuk, then a fun social bingo to get to know their fellow students. They also learned more about the college during our COI 101 overview and trivia game, explored Career Center services, and connected with faculty and staff during major breakout sessions.

We’re excited to have you as part of the UNT family and can’t wait to see all you accomplish!

Congratulations to Dr. Yunfei Du, Professor, Information Science and Associate Dean of Academics at COI, on receiving an award from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) in the amount of $428,159.

As Principal Investigator, Dr. Du will lead a 2026–2029 research project, “Creating a Multiple-Literacy Scale to Enhance Academic Library Instructional Services,” alongside Co-PIs Daniella Smith, Greg Hardin and Jiebei Luo.

The project will explore multiple-literacy needs in academic libraries and develop tools and practices to strengthen library instruction, support student success and enhance the impact of academic libraries in their communities.

From July 20-24 we closed out our summer camp series with Working with AI, where 6th–12th graders spent the week discovering how artificial intelligence can fuel creativity, productivity and problem-solving.

Campers got hands-on with AI tools to explore prompt engineering, content creation, website development, chatbots and visual design, then worked in teams to develop their own AI-powered solutions to real-world problems.

The week culminated in a Shark Tank-style competition, where teams pitched their ideas, demonstrated their prototypes and shared why their solutions matter.

From creativity and collaboration to critical thinking and AI literacy, our campers wrapped up the summer with new skills, new ideas and plenty of inspiration for what’s next!

A huge thank you to all of our campers, instructors and families who made our 2026 summer camps such a success!

Celebrating Innovation at COI Summer Research Day

On July 24, students, faculty, and industry professionals gathered at Discovery Park for the College of Information's Summer Research Day, a showcase of groundbreaking student research and collaboration.

Student researchers presented projects exploring topics such as AI-driven digital health, human-centered AI, immersive technologies, gaming, large language models, cognitive intelligence, and more. Their work reflected the innovative thinking and dedication shaping the future of technology.

The event also featured a keynote presentation from UNT alum Dr. Vikas Sinha, who shared valuable insights on bridging academic research and industry innovation to create real-world impact and help advance trustworthy AI, data science, and enterprise technology.

A big thank-you to our students, faculty mentors, industry partners, and attendees for making this event a success. We are proud to celebrate the incredible work happening across the College of Information!

Two camps. One unforgettable week of learning and innovation!

From July 13–17, our Digital Creators Institute and NexGen DATA Leadership Summer Camps brought students together to explore AI, digital creativity, data science, machine learning, and leadership through hands-on projects and collaboration.

From designing websites and creating digital content to analyzing data and solving real-world challenges, campers discovered new skills, built confidence, and explored exciting technology career pathways.

Thank you to our incredible campers and instructors for making it a week to remember!
