UNT Computer Science and Engineering

The department facilitates a collegial atmosphere that is conducive to intellectual and scholarly pursuits of the faculty and students.

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of North Texas provides very high quality educational programs by maintaining a balance between theoretical and experimental aspects of computer science, as well as a balance between software and hardware issues, and by providing curricula that serve the citizens and industrial organizations of Texas in general, and those in Nort

h Texas in particular. The department strongly encourages interdisciplinary research. At present, the department offers a Bachelor of Arts in Information Technology, Bachelor of Science, and Master of Science in Computer Science, Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Computer Engineering, and a Ph.D. in Computer Science and Engineering. At present, the department includes 19 tenured or tenure-track professors and three full-time lecturers. Current research interests of the faculty include theoretical computer science, databases, visualization, game programming, wired and wireless networks, computer security, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, computer systems architecture, agent based systems, collaborative learning, parallel and distributed processing, and numerical analysis. The departmental research is supported by federal and state agencies as well as industrial concerns.

The demand for STEM educators and computer science professionals continues to grow, and teaching experiences like this allow students to strengthen their technical expertise while inspiring the next generation of engineers and innovators.

Rahul Sharma, a Ph.D. student in Computer Science and Engineering at the University of North Texas, is serving as a STEM Instructor for the Engineering course at Johns Hopkins University's Center for Talented Youth (CTY) this summer.

In this role, Sharma teaches and mentors academically gifted students through hands on, project based learning. He designs and leads engineering design challenges, facilitates engaging STEM activities and helps students apply engineering and physics concepts to solve real world problems while developing critical thinking, collaboration and problem solving skills.

Experiences like this provide University of North Texas students with valuable opportunities to build leadership and teaching experience while sharing their passion for STEM. By guiding advanced learners through engineering design and innovation, Sharma is helping cultivate the next generation of engineers and technology leaders.

We're proud to see Rahul representing the UNT College of Engineering at Johns Hopkins University's Center for Talented Youth and wish him continued success throughout his appointment.

Congratulations to UNT CSE Ph.D. candidate, Md Abdullah Al Forhad! He presented his research at the ICML 2026 Main Conference in Seoul, South Korea. ICML is one of the world's most prestigious machine learning conferences, ranked A* by CORE.

As first author, Forhad led the development of a new AI framework. It helps AI systems learn new tasks without forgetting previously acquired knowledge. This is a major challenge in building smarter, more adaptable AI.

This achievement reflects his strong research record at UNT. To date, Forhad has published four papers during his Ph.D. His research focuses on active learning, continual learning, and multimodal learning, under the mentorship of Dr. Weishi Shi.

UNT Computer Science and Engineering student Jeffrey Bowman is interning with Texas Instruments as a Product Marketing and Applications Engineer Intern. In his role, he conducts market analysis, supports growth initiatives through company outreach, and develops demonstrations of next-generation products for customer meetings and presentations.

Experiences like this give our students the opportunity to combine technical knowledge with communication, business strategy, and customer engagement, preparing them for careers that bridge engineering and industry.
