Motivation Monday 💡

Molly Ivins was a journalist, author, and political commentator known for her irreverent wit. Ivins grew up in Houston, Texas, and earned degrees from Smith College and Columbia University School of Journalism. She began her career at the Houston Chronicle, but her work was featured in major national and Texas newspapers, including The Texas Observer, Dallas Times Herald, and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Ivins died in Austin, Texas, in 2007.

On this day, October 9, 2009, Eva Guzman was sworn in to the Texas Supreme Court, becoming the first Latina to serve on the court. Upon her election the following year, she became the first Latina elected to statewide office in Texas. Guzman grew up in Houston and attended the University of Houston before continuing her legal education at South Texas College of Law and Duke University, where she studied under Supreme Court Justices Antonin Scalia and Samuel Alito. Before being appointed to the Supreme Court, she served on the Harris County District Court and the Texas 14th Court of Appeals. In 2022, Guzman ran for the Republican Party nomination for Texas Attorney General. She continues to practice law today as a partner in a Houston-based law firm.

Happy Birthday to Jane Nelson! (October 5) 🎉

Jane Nelson has served the state of Texas for almost 40 years. She began her political career serving two terms on the Texas State Board of Education, and then she represented North Texas for 30 years as a Texas State Senator. Nelson was the first woman in Texas legislative history to chair a standing budget-writing committee. In 2023, she was appointed Secretary of State, where she ran the state's elections and international protocol.

On this day, September 30, 1918, President Woodrow Wilson addressed Congress in support of giving women the right to vote. At the time, the House of Representatives had approved the passage of the 19th Amendment, but the Senate had not held a vote. In his speech, Wilson argued that women's suffrage was vital to the war effort and said of women, “We shall need their moral sense to preserve what is right and fine and worthy in our system of life as well as to discover just what it is that ought to be purified and reformed. Without their counsellings we shall be only half wise."
