Happy Birthday to Ann Richards (August 31st 1933) 🎉

Ann Richards was the 45th Governor of Texas and a pioneer for women’s representation in government. Before running for office, Richards taught social studies and history in Austin. In 1976, she ran for Travis County Commissioner, and six years later she was elected state treasurer, becoming the first woman elected to statewide office in fifty years. Richards was only the second woman to serve as Governor of Texas, and during her tenure she appointed a record number of women to state boards, commissions, and agencies.

Ann Richards is featured in the Sue S. Bancroft Women’s Leadership Hall in the Pioneering Women exhibit. Visit the Sue S. Bancroft Women’s Leadership Hall Tuesday through Friday from 10 AM to 4 PM to learn more about Ann Richards's legacy.

Happy Birthday to Lulu B. White (August 31, 1900) 🎉

Lulu B. White was a teacher and civil rights activist whose work helped integrate the University of Texas. White was an active member of the NAACP and served as Director of the NAACP Youth Council. She became president of the Houston chapter of the NAACP in 1939, growing it into the largest in the South and becoming the first paid executive secretary. Following her death in 1957, the NAACP established the Lulu White Freedom Fund in her honor.

Lulu B. White’s legacy lives on in the Sue S. Bancroft Women’s Leadership Hall, where she is honored as a pioneering woman. Visit the Sue S.Bancroft Women’s Leadership Hall Tuesday through Friday from 10 AM to 4 PM to learn more about Lulu B. White’s life and service to Texas.

Congress established Women’s Equality Day in 1971 as an effort led by Congresswoman Bella Abzug, one of 16 women serving in Congress at the time. The day commemorates the certification of the 19th Amendment and women’s constitutional right to vote. The resolution authorizes and requests that the President of the U.S. issue a proclamation honoring the day, and every President since Nixon has followed suit.

Motivation Monday 💡

Suzann Thompson is a lifelong Texan and needlework artist. Her love of knitting and crocheting came from her family’s tradition of needlework. Thompson studied biology at the University of Texas at Austin, but knitting and crocheting eventually became her passion and career. She has written several books on needlework techniques and is the creator of TextileFusion, a signature style that blends crochet, knitting, quilting, and embellishment into fine art.
