Housed within the new Department of Emergency Management and Disaster Science, the nation’s first and most respected Bachelor of Science degree in Emergency Administration and Planning offers a rigorous curriculum that helps students develop valuable skills in disaster planning, interpersonal communication, and leadership. Congratulations to EADP alumnus and current EMDS graduate student Geogia White on her selection as an IAEM 40 under 40 honoree. According to IAEM, this prestigious award recognizes individuals under 40 who have demonstrated exceptional talent, leadership, and achievements in their respective fields.

We are very proud of her achievements so far, and we cannot wait to see the positive mark she will leave on her profession in the years ahead. Way to go, Georgia! 🦅💚🌠

Amazing EADP Alum: This month our very own Alyssa Carrier ('05) was featured as part of the UNT Alumni Spotlight. Alyssa is the founder of AC Disaster Consulting and she recently endowed the Alyssa Carrier Emergency Management Scholarship to support undergraduate students in their academic endeavors. She is doing great things in the profession and we are very proud of her!

Yesterday's adventure in Portugal included a visit to the Lisbon Quake Museum, where we learned about the 1755 earthquake. While there, we visited rooms that simulate the ground shaking of the earthquake and we learned about the response and recovery plans that were implemented in the aftermath of this disaster.

Later in the day, we took a guided tour of Belem and visited the Belem Tower.

And today, we met with members of the US Embassy in Lisbon to learn about how they protect citizens abroad and their strategies for communicating with the public. It was an amazing and engaging talk.

It's been a wonderful study abroad experience!

Her poster caught the attention of many workshop participants, leading to lively conversations and positive feedback from colleagues working in hazards and disaster research around the world.

EMDS faculty member Tristan Lin and students Brandon Boeth and Jenna Ash-Dean represented the program at the 51st Annual Natural Hazards Workshop in Broomfield, Colorado. I can't think of a better way to end our week in Barcelona than to combine emergency management and futbol ⚽.

We started the day with an amazing tour of the Directorate General for Civil Protection's Emergency Operations Center. From there we visited the Spotify Camp Nou Stadium, which is home to FC Barcelona.

What another great day studying in Spain! Today we visited the Office of Civil Protection, which oversees emergency management activities in the region of Catalonia. We learned a lot about wildfire mitigation and how emergency management is structured in the region.

The past two days, we have also received great lectures and city tours by Dr. Francesc Munoz, a professor of Urban Geography at Universidad Autonoma de Barcelona. Today we learned about some of the climate adaptation strategies implemented in Barcelona to mitigate the effects of high heat and flooding. It was an amazing tour.

Day 2 in Spain did not disappoint. We visited a fire station, Sagrada Familia, and the Casa Battlo Gaudi house. And we had a great lecture on wildfire risk and emergency management structure in Spain. Flat Scrappy even made an appearance 🦅🦅🦅
