The Dept of Spanish Language, Literary and Cultural Studies and the Dept of Political Sciences will be hosting the Biden-Harris appointed Director for the Office of Civil Rights for the United States Department of Health and Human Services, Melanie Fontes Rainer, along with regional HHS Director Lily Griego. They will be speaking about social justice and language access in the context of the work of Health and Human Services.

The Peruvian Consul General in Denver, on behalf of the President of the Republic of Perú, has announced that our Alison Krögel, Ph.D. and Professor of Andean & Quechua Studies at the SLLCS, has been awarded the honor of being named "Gran Oficial" of the Order "Al Mérito por Servicios Distinguidos," in recognition, among other things, of her extraordinary scholarship relating to Peruvian culture and her notable efforts making visible—and advocating on behalf of—Quechua-speaking Peruvian sheepherders living in Colorado and Wyoming. The Peruvian Government is recognizing Alison for years of dedication to being a champion of Perú in her teaching, scholarship, community-engagement, and advocacy.

This is a massive and rare honor!

The Office of the Regional Director of HHS (Health and Human Services) REGION 8 highlights Alexander, Rasika, and Zara, with an extra shoutout to Isaac and Alexandra who are in our SPAN 3997 Internship class. All 5 of these students help make up their Spring 2023 internship cohort. The program provides work opportunities to students and lets them explore Federal careers while continuing in school. Once completing the program students are eligible for permanent careers in these positions.

Native languages have a strong influence on the way people speak other languages around the world. This is no different for Bolivia with Quechua often popping up in their Spanish. Here are a few examples.

Bolivia has 64 languages, and Bolivian Spanish is one of the most common. What makes Bolivian Spanish different from other kinds of Spanish? Learn 53 words and phrases that are unique to Bolivian Spanish and the Quechua language from which many colloquialisms arose.
