We are sorry to say that The Cultural Center (TCC) is officially closed at The University of Denver. For several months, there have been tremendous challenges presented to our office including the elimination of our assistant director’s position, elimination of one of our graduate assistantships, a revision to our TCC Director position descriptions and department mission, a transfer of our department out of the Division of Student Affairs, and the closing of the BIPOC Lounge, Pride Lounge, and Pride Closet –ultimately forcing an erasure or reduction of direct support services and resources for our LGBTQ+ and BIPOC students. Finally, The Chancellor made the decision to merge TCC with two other support offices, Black Community Initiatives and Native American & Indigenous Initiatives, to form The Community Connections Team, under the former Division of DEI. As we are no longer able to directly support Gender and Sexuality Student Success or BIPOC Student Success at DU, we have decided to leave our positions at DU.
To our students:
We will miss you! Your passion and dedication to creating an inclusive campus that celebrates diverse identities cannot be stifled. We have loved our time with you and truly wish each of you the success, dignity, and respect you all deserve. We hope that you understand our decision. Our one regret is that we will not be able to support the current students as the university continues to strip students of color and LGBTQ+ students of necessary resources. We encourage you to speak up about your experiences on this campus and we encourage you to connect with your equity leaders and amazing peers on campus – there is strength in community! And we know you all will still find ways to be successful at this university. This is a goodbye to DU but not a goodbye to you all. Please email [email protected] for future support requests.
