Founded in 1870 — before Colorado was even a state — Colorado State University has spent more than 156 years helping shape the state through research, education, and practical solutions that serve the public good. From agriculture, water, and climate to veterinary medicine, engineering, and a statewide Extension network, CSU has been a steady partner in Colorado's growth.

As Colorado marks its 150th anniversary and the U.S. its 250th in 2026, CSU stands as a testament to what public higher education can do — expanding opportunity, strengthening communities, and building what comes next.

“The real question is not whether higher education matters. It is whether it delivers value in ways that are visible, relevant, and connected to the country’s future. If that is the standard, then the United States already has a blueprint. We’re just not talking about it enough.”

In a recent piece for SOURCE, CSU President Amy Parsons discusses the value of higher education and how it might just be hiding in plain sight 🔗 col.st/57y88

Neil Grigg, a CSU alumnus and professor of civil and environmental engineering, is the embodiment of Colorado State University's wide-ranging expertise in water management.

His incredible career, one that spans six decades of working in water, was featured in the latest edition of STATE Magazine.

“A lot of times, I feel like I am doing nothing but telling stories to students. But in my career, I have tried to find a way to bring theory and reality together in a coherent way. Stories do just that, and we can learn a lot from what has already happened.”

“We are experiencing water scarcity and aridification – the drying of the landscape from extended drought – combined with increasing populations and competition for water. Despite that, we have the capacity to solve these issues. We have technology, the political will, and education. We need to bring about change in perspectives and do the work that needs to be done to sustainably manage our water in the West, by first recognizing the different values, needs, and interests.”

In the latest edition of STATE Magazine, Karen Schlatter, director of CSU’s Colorado Water Center, answers questions about a precious resource in Colorado, underscoring its complexity and the importance of its management, especially in a time of drought.

“As we honor the state’s 150th birthday and look to the future, American public higher education will thrive because it is aligned with that small, simple, almost innocent thing called hope.”

In the Spring 2026 edition of STATE Magazine, CSU System Chancellor Dr. Tony Frank writes about how Land-grant universities encourage students to see a new future for themselves and their families. You can read it here 🔗 col.st/fjbjp

Earlier this month, CSU celebrated the inaugural cohort of RAM Scholars at the RAM Scholars Champion Celebration.

Standing for "Reaching Adult Milestones," RAM Scholars began three years ago as an inclusive higher education program for adults with intellectual disabilities and related neurogenetic conditions, such as Down syndrome, autism, and other conditions. Students work alongside their mentors — fellow CSU students — through a variety of courses in agriculture and STEM fields.

"One of our catch phrases is 'We can do hard things.' Everyone steps up to the plate and takes away really great learning outcomes. We can all learn something from whatever our starting point is, and that's really powerful. We can all be CSU. We can all be part of this community." - Program Coordinator Kaylyn Van Deusen

Congratulations to this amazing cohort of students 🎉

When Colorado became a state 150 years ago, the Colorado Agricultural College was already driving agricultural innovations to improve the economy and quality of life. With this focus, the college shaped food production, water management, and other activities in the fledgling state.

In the Spring 2026 edition of STATE magazine, Colorado State University historians Linda Meyer and Gordon Hazard discuss how the Colorado Agricultural College influenced the early days of the Centennial State.
