Wow! Quite the turnout for the event reception for two ongoing book arts exhibitions "(Un)Altered Books: Unheard Voices," curated by Lynne Muth, Susan Vaho, Robyn Jackson and Shanti Zaid with the Colorado Chapter of the Women’s Caucus for Art and in partnership with DU Libraries and Blair-Caldwell African American Research Library and member show for Rocky Mountain and Wasatch Chapter Members, "Rocky Mountain Bound."

This event and these exhibitions are just one way we're celebrating creative and intellectual expression through book arts this banned books week.

We love partnering with College of Arts, Humanities, & Social Sciences at DU faculty! This morning we shared some 17th century documents from our collection with Ingrid Tague's freshman seminar on the British Monarchy. Students got to spend time with original documents on vellum and rag paper from the time period they are studying, which included some in depth text analysis as well as conversation about how some contemporary scholars are using tools for handwriting character recognition.

We're kicking off the school year with a new tradition, where we showcase a recent acquisition to one of our collections. Our first selection couldn't be a better fit for fall in Denver-it's Thunder Baby!

Thunder Baby is a toy stick horse that lived in Joy Burns' personal suite in the Broncos' stadium. Guests were invited to "ride" Thunder Baby to celebrate a Broncos touchdown, just as the real life Thunder would on the sidelines! Each guest would pose with Joy and Thunder Baby and their photo would be added to the "Thunder Baby Wall of Fame."

All materials featured are from the Joy S. and Franklin L. Burns Papers.

Woodstock West, University of Denver's best known anti Vietnam War protest, took place May 4-13. The protest ranged all over the DU campus, into downtown for a march with students from campuses across the state, and included the rebuilding of the encampment that was torn down. Despite appearances by the National Guard and Denver Police in riot gear, the protest remained peaceful.

2026 marks 56 years since the Vietnam War protest at known as Woodstock West. Students had already been planning a protest in early May after the late April invasion of Cambodia marked an expansion of the war. After the March 4th protest at Kent State where 4 students were shot and killed, the DU protest expanded into a five day, wide ranging encampment. Though there were no injuries and the protest was peaceful, tensions ran high, especially when the National Guard and Denver Police were called in.

Before there was Miracle on Ice, there was the 1959-60 DU hockey season. 🏒

The dominance of the team in 1959-60 can't be overstated. In February of 1960, DU played a series of exhibition games against teams on their way to California for the Winter Olympics. They beat and then played the eventual gold medal US team to a tie, tied the eventual bronze medal Soviets, who had and would dominate Olympic hockey for decades, and also beat teams from West Germany and Sweden. The team then went on to win the national championship against Michigan Tech.

Now that has won its record 11th championship, we give you the man that started it all, Coach Murray Armstrong, posing with the very first championship trophy 🏆 in 1958. In their inaugural championship appearance, the Pioneers defeated North Dakota 6–2. Armstrong's teams would go on to win 7 titles during his tenure, in addition to holding the internationally dominant Soviet team to a tie game.

Thanks for building a great foundation, Coach. 🫡

In honor of DU's upcoming title hockey game, we have a blast from 's very successful past!

In this photo, University of Denver men's ice hockey players (left to right) Tim Gould (3), Keith Magnuson (2), and Dale Zeman (6) celebrate their national championship victory by carrying head coach Murray Armstrong after the 1968-1969 NCAA championship game of the DU Pioneers against the Cornell University Big Red in Broadmoor Arena, Colorado Springs, Colorado on March 15, 1969.

Did you know that DU used to have a Black Cultural Center?

In 1973, thanks to the efforts of and other groups for Black students on campus, as well as the efforts of alum Moses Brewer who was also the student ombuds, the University agreed to the use of a house at 2041 Race Street. Pictured: Moses Brewer in his office, ca 1970s.

This image and more will be on display in a collaborative exhibition with BSA, at the Community Commons Gallery, opening February 13. Check it out!

DU history is Black history and Black history is DU history.

Printed Page V is going up this week, and is your first taste of Mo'Print. Juried by Curator of Special Collections Kate Crowe and Abecedarian's Alicia Bailey, this is a celebration of so many different printmaking methods integrated into the book form.

Keep an eye out for events as we get through the winter solstice and the days get a bit longer!
