Coronavirus Update

You are likely aware that the coronavirus is now considered a world-wide pandemic, with cases in Colorado increasing quickly. Public health officials are advising that even stronger mitigation actions be taken.

The CU Denver Health Professions Programs Office has already undertaken a number of steps to keep our community safe by limiting people-to-people contact. As of today (March 13, 2020), there have been updated decisions made by the CU Denver Administrative Team regarding how we handle remote teaching and learning and meetings and events.

It is strongly encouraged that all meetings, including student appointments be conducted remotely starting Monday, March 16th. In response to this directive, the Health Professions Programs Office will suspend all walk-in advising hours and in place offer 20 minute remote advising sessions. Additionally, we will continue to offer regular advising sessions, ranging from 30 minutes to an hour. I have attached the updated schedule for you to look at. You will find each individual’s office hours and information on how you can request an appointment moving forward. Please note that Dr. Brooks will begin his updated office hour schedule on Monday, March 30th.

In order to facilitate planning and eliminate as much uncertainty as possible, the Health Professions Programs Office will continue remote advising for the entirety of the spring 2020 semester. Updates will be posted on our webpage and I will send new information out via the listserv as it becomes available.
I hope you and your families stay safe, and that you continue to utilize our services at this time. Thank you in advance for your patience as we navigate this challenging situation one day at a time to best serve you.
Respectfully,

Trishia Vasquez

11/25/2019

Due to the potential for inclement weather predicted for tonight and tomorrow, there is a possibility for a full campus closure tomorrow. The decision is made by 4:45 a.m. by University Leadership. It is at that time that the decision is made whether to open as normal, delay opening or close for the day. This is communicated to the campus community thru the Info Line at 877-463-6070, the website at www.ucdenver.edu/alert, the RAVE mass notification system and the local media no later than 5:00 a.m. The most reliable and comprehensive information is found by calling the toll free number or checking the university website. Please check one of these things before coming in tomorrow. As of now, if you have an appt. between 8:00 and 12:00 noon, we will need to reschedule as we just received an email saying that the campus is closed at least until 12:00 noon tomorrow.

TORNADOES AND SEVERE WEATHER: Do not assume that it is safe if a weather alert (“watch” or “warning”) has not been issued as tornados or other severe weather can crop up at any time.  You may be at risk and should prepare to take cover anytime severe weather threatens.  Severe weather info...

Information on Letter Packet Seminars:

A Letter Packet is a packet or set of letters assembled and distributed by Health Professions Programs Advising Office that accompanies the student's application to AMCAS, AACOMAS, or AADSAS. A Letter Packet is not a Committee Letter. Unlike a Committee Letter, a Letter Packet does not include an evaluative letter from the Health Professions Committee or Health Professions Advisor, nor does it qualify as an endorsement of the candidate.

It is the goal of the Health Professions Office to continue to support all students in their application process. We will be supporting students by providing a modified Evaluation/Preparation packet to all students who request one and want to participate in the Letter Packet Process. The evaluation packet will do much the same thing that the old Committee Letter Packet did in helping you as a student prepare for the application process. To participate in the letter packet process, you will be required to attend an information session to review the letter packet process, how to ask for letters of recommendation and whom to ask, and to receive the evaluation packet. For the letter packet, you will provide 3-5 outside letters in total from references of your choice, keeping in mind that two of the letters you get MUST be from Science CU Denver faculty members that you have taken classes from or worked in their research lab for at least one semester. If you want a letter from a health professions advisor, it will count as one of these 3-5 letters. At the same time, you do not need to have a letter from a health professions advisor to take advantage of the Letter Packet process. It is the student's responsibility to ensure that all letters of recommendation have been received by the Health Profession Programs Office (Ms. Vasquez, Director of the Health Professions Programs Office) by Friday, May 29, 2020. No exceptions will be made to this date.

All applicants receiving Letter Packets must be certified as students in good standing at CU Denver. In addition, each student receiving a Letter Packet must agree to waive their right, under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Acts of 1974, to view the Letter Packet, including the contents of their letters of recommendation that are sent to the Health Professions Programs Office at CU Denver.

If you are planning on participating in the Letter Packet process, you must attend one of the seminars. If you do not attend, then you will have to provide a separate entry for each letter writer and they will have to upload your letter individually. You only need to attend ONE of these seminars, but attendance is required to obtain a letter packet. I would also like to ask that you help spread the word on this to folks you know who may be applying this upcoming cycle who may not be on this list serv.

That said, if you are interested in participating in the Letter Packet process, including the Evaluation/Preparation packet, please sign up to attend one of the seminars below using the link provided:
