Orientation at the Sturm College of Law kicked off today with remarks to our incoming class from Colorado Supreme Court Justice Susan Blanco. Influenced by her participation in speech and debate teams while in college, she chose the path to becoming a lawyer and embraced the knowledge that you don't always know where your journey will lead. Justice Blanco emphasized that lawyers are guardians of civil rights, especially during times when we see those rights being eroded. She concluded saying that "Your differences are your contributions. Your identity is your strength," and to "Practice as you want to see the legal profession look like."

Professor Lucy Marsh has been selected as the 2026 recipient of the National College of Probate Judges Treat Award for Excellence for her transformative work in the field of probate law, including founding the Tribal Wills Project and the Wills Lab at the Sturm College of Law. Ever wonder about the 1892 origin story of the University of Denver Law School (now the Sturm College of Law)? Colorado resident Kendall Desmond did, when she came across a 19th Century diary in collection of old books while researching her own genealogy. She discovered that the diary belonged to George C. Manly, a seminal figure in the creation of the law school, who would later become its third dean from 1910-1926. Learn about Desmond’s discovery in The Denver Post, and read more about Manly and the law school’s origins in Dean Emeritus Harold E. Professor Sam Kamin was elected to the American Law Institute (ALI), the nation's leading independent organization dedicated to clarifying and improving the law. Membership in the ALI is a distinct honor, reserved exclusively for a select group of judges, lawyers, and legal scholars who have demonstrated excellence in their fields.

A member of the Sturm College of Law faculty since 1999, Professor Kamin is a nationally recognized scholar in criminal law, criminal procedure, constitutional law, and ma*****na regulation. He is a co-author of West Academic Publishing’s Investigative Criminal Procedure: A Contemporary Approach and Cases and Materials on the Death Penalty.

The Colorado Water Fellows Program at the Sturm College of Law

Denver Law is preparing the next generation of leaders to take on the West’s growing water challenges. First-year students can engage with water law from day one through the law school’s Colorado Water Fellows Program, which was launched two years ago with support from the Colorado Water Conservation Board. The program builds on DU’s commitment to creating certainty, equity, and justice in the access, availability, and adaptability of water rights. With DU’s internationally recognized Water Law Review, its renowned water and natural resources faculty, and a far-reaching alumni network, the water fellows join a dynamic community working to meet the competing demands on one of the West’s most vital resources.
