University of Colorado Denver Philosophy Department Also follow us on Instagram and Twitter It is not an easy field. An undergraduate degree in philosophy is academically rigorous.

The study of philosophy is concerned with the transmission and evaluation of basic beliefs and values about reality, knowledge and logic, morality, and social justice. It provides a fundamental basis for understanding many areas+ of human endeavor, including science, art and literature, religion, communication, education, politics, and technology. But for more than 25 centuries philosophy has been

judged most rewarding by those who seek self-development, intellectual sophistication, and the happiness of a reflective life. It is excellent preparation for law and medicine, as well as a spectrum of entry-level positions in business, public service and more. November 18th, 2025-- The University of Colorado-Denver's Philosophy Department has invited Dr. Karim Barakat from the American University of Beirut to present to our community. He will be discussing artificial intelligence and exploitation in the Tivoli Student Union, Room 444 on November 18th, 2025 at 3:30-5pm.

Abstract: The use of sentiment analysis, impact analysis, and similar tools in suppressing discourse in the public sphere raises questions regarding the extent to which generative AI has contributed to exacerbating inequalities in society. While algorithms have allowed for controlling hate speech in the public sphere to some degree, I argue that epistemic difficulties have contributed to promoting the discourse of dominant groups while widening gaps in representation. Politically, I argue that this introduces significant concerns about algorithmic censorship in terms of how these practices reinforce the status quo and further marginalize disenfranchised groups by echoing already existing power imbalances. Furthermore, I maintain that these techniques' have advanced new forms fo econoic and political expolitation through the regulation of content by algorithms, ones that have rendered already carved out social realities subject to political mamipulation.

Refreshments and conversation will follow the event.

Amid a climate of political unrest and pervasive uncertainty, Dr. Kim Wilson’s forthcoming lecture, Lessons from We Grow the World Together, offers a timely and thought-provoking exploration of resilience and collective care. Drawing on the experiences of organizers, healers, incarcerated individuals, and educators featured in the anthology, Dr. Wilson examines how principles of interdependence, movement building, and “parenting toward abolition” can inform meaningful responses to today’s pressing social and political challenges. This lecture offers a deeply reflective and instructive engagement with strategies for navigating the current moment with purpose, integrity, and hope.

What if true hospitality requires hesitation?
In encounters with strangers, hesitation is often seen as a moment of uncertainty—but what if it is a necessary pause that shapes the ethics of welcome and refusal? This paper explores how hesitation functions in hospitality, revealing the temporal dynamics that determine whether a stranger is embraced or rejected. Drawing on Alia Al-Saji’s theories of hesitation, Elizabeth Freeman’s concept of “temporal drag,” and Jacques Derrida’s provocative assertion that “we do not know what hospitality is,” this work interrogates the colonial and heteronormative forces that have collapsed this crucial interval of discernment. By re-examining the time of hesitation, this paper opens new possibilities for rethinking hospitality, power, and the politics of encounter.
