Meet another one of our incredible Session 3 Instructors, Pablo Perez!
Position: Filmmaking Instructor
Bio: “Pablo is a cinematographer, producer, and FAA-certified drone pilot, and he teaches cinematography and documentary production at CU Denver. He’s been working in film for over 15 years, both in the U.S. and Cuba, on everything from feature films and TV series to documentaries and commercials.
He’s spent a lot of time working on larger productions as a line producer and unit production manager, managing shoots across different locations and working with crews from different backgrounds. He’s also one of the founders of Ajar Film Productions, where he’s shot and produced documentaries on topics like the arts, healthcare, and social issues—many of which have aired on Rocky Mountain PBS and screened at festivals.
Some of his recent work includes 16 Heartbeats (2026), about Denver’s 16th Street, and Built with HeART (2025), which won Best Short at the Wild West Film Festival. His projects have picked up awards at festivals like San Antonio and WorldFest-Houston.
Outside of film sets, he’s worked with nonprofits and organizations around Denver, and he often brings students onto real productions so they can learn by doing. Before film, he studied mechanical engineering and accounting in Havana, which still influences how he approaches problem-solving on set.”
When asked what he was most looking forward to about camp, Pablo said, “I’m really looking forward to being on set with students and showing them how things actually work in practice. There’s a big difference between talking about filmmaking and doing it, and I like helping students get hands-on with cameras, lighting, and problem-solving in real time. I’m especially excited to see how they start to think visually and work together as a team, it’s one of the best parts of teaching.”
