🎓 Major/Minor: Criminal Justice & Criminology major with a minor in Criminalistics

🔎 Career Goal: Aspiring Crime Scene Investigator

Kayla has a strong academic interest in wrongful conviction cases and how they intersect with crime scene investigations. She’s passionate about pursuing justice through careful, ethical investigative work. She’s also considering joining an academy to become a police officer as part of her journey toward working as a Criminal Scene Investigator.

⭐ DGX Member/Advisor Spotlight: Dr. Jenn Cheek ⭐
We are pleased to spotlight Dr. Jenn Cheek, PhD, Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice & Criminology and esteemed advisor to Delta Gamma Xi.
Dr. Cheek is in her 3rd year at MSU Denver and 12th year of teaching. She is currently transforming her dissertation into a book with Southern Illinois University Press and contributing a chapter on evaluating sex-trafficking services for an upcoming volume on anti-oppressive research and practice. Additionally, she is working to enhance internship and experiential learning opportunities for students throughout the department.
Her professional experience encompasses both qualitative and quantitative research, volunteer work with victim service agencies supporting sex-trafficking survivors, and continued engagement with the Death Row Support Project.
🏆 Accomplishments:�• PhD in Sociology with a focus on social inequality and victimization�• Recipient of MSU Denver’s 2025 Career Catalyst Award�• Recipient of the 2025 Workforce Champion Award�• Recipient of the 2024 Roadrunners Who Soar Award�• Recently published a chapter in a forensic victimology textbook:� Cheek, Jennifer. 2025. “Human Trafficking.” In Fundamentals of Forensic Victimology: Insights into Crime, Trauma, and Justice. 🦃🔎 THANKSGIVING MYSTERY: Case File T-301 — The Stolen Cranberry Sauce
Can you figure out who took it? 🕵️‍♂️

At the Honor Society’s Thanksgiving prep, a jar of homemade cranberry sauce went missing from the refrigerated prep table.�The table was guarded by a “Do Not Touch” sign, but the sauce disappeared between 2:45 PM and 3:05 PM.
There are four suspects, You must combine clues carefully to solve it.

🔍 CLUES
Clue 1 — Smudged Fingerprints
The fingerprints on the jar are smudged, but lab notes confirm one right thumbprint is partially clear.�Other prints are messy or too small to match.
Clue 2 — Apron Stains
Three aprons in the kitchen have stains:
• Skyler: small flour streaks
• Jordan: red stain (fresh)
• Riley: water spots
• Taylor: no stains
Clue 3 — Time Log
Only one suspect was signed in exactly during the disappearance window: 2:45–3:05 PM.�Other suspects’ log entries either end before or start after that window.
Clue 4 — Shelf Placement
The missing jar came from the top middle shelf of the walk-in fridge.�Only two suspects were tall enough to comfortably reach the top middle shelf without a stool.
