Drake senior Alex Colby is turning research into real-world impact. Alex, an Environmental Science and Sustainability major, recently identified blue-green algae in a local lake and documented a rare amoeba that has not been recorded in North America since 1888 — discoveries that highlight the importance of water quality research in Iowa. Next, Alex plans to pursue graduate study focused on wetland management and reducing harmful algal blooms. Planning to audition for All-State Music Festival in October? Drake University will host an All-State Strings Intensive on Saturday, September 26 that offers targeted practice strategies for each audition excerpt, along with guidance on structuring their remaining preparation time through audition day. Sessions will be led by Drake University faculty and musicians of the Des Moines Symphony. Registration is open now!
