This week’s Friday Faces of Applebaum spotlight recognizes Douglas “Dutch” Nie II, a 1992 graduate of Wayne State University’s Mortuary Science program and a respected leader in the funeral service profession.

As Owner, President/CEO, and Funeral Director of Nie Family Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Dutch has continued a family tradition of serving others with compassion and care. Inspired by the impact his parents had on their community, he pursued a career dedicated to helping families through some of life’s most difficult moments.

A proud Wayne State graduate, Dutch credits the university’s Mortuary Science program with preparing him for a successful career and fostering lifelong friendships.

Throughout his professional journey, Dutch has demonstrated exceptional leadership, serving as President of the Michigan Funeral Directors Association in 2013 and President of the National Funeral Directors Association from 2023–2024.

This weekend, WSU Applebaum’s junior and senior Radiation Therapy students participated in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk!

They came together to raise awareness, support survivors and honor those affected by breast cancer. Their compassion, teamwork and commitment to community extended beyond the classroom.

This week’s Friday Faces of Applebaum spotlight recognizes Tracy Karinen, a 2008 graduate of Wayne State University’s Physician Assistant Studies program.

At Wayne State, she found her path in the Physician Assistant Studies program and gained clinical experience serving Detroit’s diverse communities.

Since graduating in 2008, Tracy has worked in gastroenterology and hospital medicine while taking on a leadership role at Ascension Health. She continues to care for patients alongside her work supporting health care teams.

On Saturday, Oct. 10, WSU Applebaum students, faculty and friends will take part in the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides of Detroit, supporting people and families affected by breast cancer.

Learning about development is one thing. Seeing it unfold through movement, exploration and play brings those lessons to life.

During the annual OT Baby Lab, WSU Applebaum occupational therapy students had the opportunity to observe and interact with babies as they explored a variety of activities. The experience helps students connect concepts from the classroom with real-life development while building skills they’ll carry into their future work as occupational therapists.

There were plenty of happy babies and curious explorers throughout the lab.

A special thank you to the families who participated and helped create such a valuable hands-on learning opportunity for our students.

This week’s Friday Faces of Applebaum spotlight recognizes Allison Peruski, a 2015 graduate of Wayne State University’s Radiologic Technology program.

Drawn to Wayne State for its diversity and the opportunity to become an imaging specialist, Allison has built an impressive career marked by clinical expertise and a commitment to patient care. In 2023, she received an Honorable Hero Award after identifying a life-threatening aortic dissection during a routine exam, helping expedite lifesaving treatment for a patient.

Today, Allison serves as a Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist in CT technology at the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center, where she specializes in cardiac imaging and trains new technologists in advanced procedures.
