Thanks to a Wayne State University Humanities Center Humanities@Work internship, political science student Bella Lager is making an impact on the Detroit waterfront this summer as a Belle Isle Conservancy intern! Operating “Betty” the BeBot, a beach-cleaning robot, Bella is helping collect microplastics, analyze beach pollution data, and educate the community on litter prevention.

Betty the BeBot returns for the third year on Belle Isle Beach to fight against plastic pollution. A part of the “Keep Belle Isle Beautiful ” campaign from Belle Isle Conservancy and one of the parts of the incentive of the “Great Lakes Plastic Cleanup” as a collaboration between the Council of the Great Lakes Region and U.S. and Pollution Probe in Canada.

This also includes a partnership with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. With the funding of $280,000 from Meijer this year as well. Betty has the ability to cover 32,000 feet per hour on her battery power and pull trash and debris off the beach.

To help volunteer with the Belle Isle Conservancy and Betty, the cleanup dates will be every second Friday of the month from July to September from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Belle Isle Beach. Also, every third Saturday from now to October 17, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and Wednesdays from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Belle Isle Beach as well.

Wayne State University has launched the Barber Center for Multiscale Systems Biology, a new cross-college interdisciplinary research center jointly housed within the Wayne State University College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the Wayne State University School of Medicine.

The center was established through the $3 million Barber Fund, which includes a $2.5 million bequest from alumnus Richard J. Barber '53, J.D. '55, and will connect researchers across the physical sciences, biological sciences and medicine to accelerate discoveries that improve human health, positioning Wayne State as a national leader in collaborative biomedical research.

Surprise! Today, we were graced by visits from two Chow Lab alums, Anne-Cecile Duc (PhD, 2009) gave a biochemistry seminar and Sanjaya Abeysirigunawardena (PhD, 2008) dropped in for a visit. Anne-Cecile is a professor at Nîmes Université in France and Sanjaya is a professor at Kent State University. Always great to catch up with our alumni 💚💛

Twenty adults earned their high school equivalency through Wayne State University's Another Chance program this year. Free, project-based and rooted in , the program has helped more than 5,000 learners since 2009. Fall enrollment opens in August.

For more than 17 years, a small but determined team from WSU African American Studies has been helping adults who never finished high school get a 2nd chance.
