Buddhika Abeysekara (Groysman Lab) presented her PhD research as an oral presentation at the ACS Fall 2026 Meeting in Chicago, through the ACS Division of Catalysis Science & Technology (CATL).

Himanshu Yadav (Brock Lab) received the Excellence and Leadership in Science Outreach and Engagement Award from the American Chemical Society and had the opportunity to meet and hear lectures from Chemistry Nobel Laureates Prof. Stan Whittingham.

Livia Philip (Nguyen Lab) gave a research talk and her Nguyen lab-mate Felix Chukwu took part in a poster session.

Jayod Vishwaka (Chow Group) presented his research at ACS Fall 2026, focused on understanding the structural and functional effects of the antimicrobial peptide Oncocin and its interactions with its biological target.

Ruwandhi Jayasundara (Groysman Lab) at her first ACS national meeting! She presented her published as a co-first author.

April Sweet Tapayan, of the Nguyen Lab, received the Women Chemists Committee (WCC) Merck Research Award at the meeting. This recognition highlights her outstanding contributions to the field of chemistry and chemical biology and her commitment to advancing research in the sciences. April presented her research: “Leveraging cell-curface sugar mimicry to target and understand tau–heparanase crosstalk in Alzheimer’s disease” at the symposium.

April was recognized alongside other award recipients: Sara Nixon, Ana Victoria Serna, Komal NA, Julia McAfee, Dani Schultz, Lucy Huffman, Laura Rodriguez, and Nhu Quach. Congratulations to everyone!

This afternoon, we honored two of our alums, Brian Johns and Duleeka Wannipurage with Distinguished Alumni awards. Brian Johns received his PhD in Organic Chemistry under the direction of Professor Carl R. Johnson in 1977, and has had a celebrated career as a chemist specializing in drug discovery for over 20 years. His current research interests are focused on using RNA as a platform to create novel medicines. Duleeka Wannipurage earned her PhD in Inorganic Chemistry under Professor Stanislav Groysman in 2021. Today, Dr. Wannipurage is a Senior Research Chemist at Exxon Mobile, where she works developing materials to lower industrial emissions. Congratulations to Brian and Duleeka!

We are proud to announce that Dr. Clementinah Oladun successfully defended her doctoral thesis yesterday. Her thesis work on "Development of Hyperpolarized Contrast Media for Pulmonary MRI and Instrumentation for Low-Field MR” was carried out under the supervision of Ed Chekmenev (advisor), Mary Kay Pflum, and Wen Li.
