Our M2 students took another exciting step forward in their U.S. Medical Licensing Examination Step 1 preparation journey this week!

As part of our Step Prep Workshop and Webinar Series, upperclassmen Trevor and Zack led an engaging workshop on Oct. 13, bringing together M2 students and their M3/M4 peers for an afternoon of practical guidance, shared experiences and encouragement.

Step 1 is the first of a three-part standardized testing series required to earn a medical license to practice medicine in the United States.

The first hour featured an interactive Student Panel, where upperclassmen shared their Step 1 preparation strategies, lessons learned, and valuable insights while answering questions from M2 students.

The second hour transitioned into a relaxed, informal walk-in mentorship session, where students connected one-on-one with upperclassmen over donuts and c***r, creating a welcoming space for candid conversations, personalized advice, and peer support.

The event was wonderful reminder that the Step 1 journey is not one our students have to navigate alone. Through shared experiences, mentorship, and a supportive learning community, our students are empowering one another to approach this important milestone with confidence and purpose.

Do you know an aspiring doctor who is 7 to 11 years old? Register for the 36th annual Reach Out to Youth, to be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Nov. 7 at the Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit.

The free program features engaging and inspiring workshops designed to encourage Detroit-area youth to explore careers in the medical profession. The program is focused on students who are underrepresented in the fields of science and medicine, and is hosted by Wayne State University School of Medicine’s chapter of the Student National Medical Association/Black Medical Student Association.

Congratulations to Christine Lee, a doctoral candidate in our Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurosciences’ Translational Neuroscience Program and third-year fellow in the Institute of Gerontology’s predoctoral training program, who was awarded the F31 Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award for Individual Predoctoral Fellows by the National Institute on Aging. The award will support her project examing how air pollution exposure may act as a modifiable environmental risk factor in cognitive and brain aging.

💚 Happy ! 💛 Today we're shouting out our awesome Wayne State University Warriors who provided complimentary blood pressure screenings and resources to attendees of the 🎃 Detroit Harvest Festival 🍂 this past weekend, held at Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Centennial Park along the Detroit River.

The event brought together Detroit residents, families, community organizations, and local partners for a weekend of activities, connection and celebration. This was a truly meaningful opportunity for our students, faculty, alumni and residents to engage with and serve our Detroit community. That's what being a is all about!

Our volunteers engaged with and educated approximately 120 community members while creating valuable hands-on, interprofessional learning opportunities.

"We are deeply grateful for our continued partnership with the Conservancy and the Riverwalkers, as well as our ongoing collaboration with community partners who create opportunities for meaningful engagement throughout Detroit," said Dr. Rima Charara, who directs our service-learning course and is a faculty member in our Department of Internal Medicine and 's Department of Pharmacy Practice.

"These partnerships allow us to connect service, education, and community health in ways that benefit both our learners and the communities we serve," she said.

Wayne State University School of Medicine alumna Dr. Alysia Green, has built an extraordinary career in sports medicine, including serving on the U.S. Olympic medical staff at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang. Today, she is Medical Director for Northwestern Medicine Student Health Services and a team physician for women’s lacrosse and volleyball.

But her journey hasn’t always been a straight line.

After stepping away from medicine to care for her father, Green returned to Wayne State for the first time in 20 years to speak with medical students. Their energy reminded her why she became a physician and helped inspire her return to clinical care.

🎉 Congratulations to T'Emi Oshin, a Med-Direct junior in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the Irvin D. Reid Honors College at Wayne State University, who has been selected for the Obama-Chesky Voyager Scholarship for Public Service!
