On June 19, 1865, news of freedom finally reached the last enslaved African Americans in Galveston — more than two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth is a celebration of liberation, resilience, resistance, and the unbreakable pursuit of self-determination.

At HBC&U Legacies, we honor the generations who transformed freedom into opportunity. From the establishment of Historically Black Colleges and Universities during and after the era of Reconstruction to the scholars, educators, leaders, artists, and innovators who continue their legacy today, education has always been one of our greatest tools of empowerment.

The journey from emancipation to education is a powerful testament to the dreams of those who believed that freedom must include access, knowledge, and the ability to shape one’s own future.

Today, we celebrate Black brilliance in every classroom, on every campus, and within every community. We honor our ancestors by continuing the work — opening doors, preserving history, and ensuring the next generation understands that they are part of a legacy far greater than themselves.

At 99 years young, Opal Lee continues to inspire generations as the "Grandmother of Juneteenth."

A proud Wiley College (now University) graduate, educator, activist, and recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, Ms. Lee spent decades advocating for Juneteenth to be recognized as a national holiday. Her unwavering commitment to truth, justice, and remembrance helped secure a historic victory for our nation.

As we celebrate , we honor the legacy of a woman who turned perseverance into progress and ensured that the story of freedom would never be forgotten.

Alabama State University and Morris Brown College have officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding that will provide Morris Brown graduates with a pathway to pursue graduate studies at Alabama State.

This collaboration strengthens the bond between two historic HBCUs while expanding opportunities for students to continue their academic journeys, advance their careers, and build upon the rich legacy of Black higher education. We are truly stronger TOGETHER!

Funk Train will be performing LIVE at Yardfest 2026.
