Today, we proudly celebrate 77 years of brotherhood, service, and excellence at Jimmie Lunceford Lodge No. 45, Free & Accepted Masons, P.H.A.

Founded in the spirit of leadership, unity, and community upliftment, our Lodge carries the name of the legendary bandleader Jimmie Lunceford — a symbol of excellence, discipline, and pride within the African American community. Since our chartering in 1948, we have remained steadfast in our commitment to Masonic principles: Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth.

Known as The Lodge of Kings, we continue to build upon a powerful legacy of service, mentorship, and achievement — proudly earning the honor of being named the 2025 Lodge of the Year.

History of Jimmie Lunceford Lodge

In an agreement with many other Masons of our Jurisdiction, it was stated that we needed a Musical Department for our many functions, permission was requested and received from the Most Worshipful Grand Master, Walter J. Stewart to organize a Musicians Lodge. This group was organized into a Club called the Lyric Club and immediately began to sponsor activities to finance their admission into our Body. On February 7, 1947 the Deputy Grand Master William O. Greene was authorized to comply with the request from the Lyric Club that they be made Master Masons. This group later became known as Jimmie Lunceford Lodge U.D. After successfully completing the process as a lodge under dispensation on April 28, 1948 at the 83rd Annual Grand Communication in Port Huron, Michigan Jimmie Lunceford Lodge No. 45, Free and Accepted Masons of Mi was chartered under the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Michigan.

Bennie Johnson served the lodge as its first Worshipful Master with Henry Warren and Lloyd Cooper serving as Senior and Junior Wardens respectively. Since this time Jimmie Lunceford Lodge has operated continuously with strong leadership, dedication and cooperation from its membership in the City of Detroit specifically and the Jurisdiction of Michigan.
