Wayne State University Organization of Black Alumni - OBA In September 1989, a reunion gathering of African-American alumni evolved into a vision and plan of action to develop the Organization of Black Alumni (OBA).

We celebrate the stories of Wayne State's African American and Black alumni, fostering lifelong connections with the university through programs, events, volunteer activities, resources and communications. On October 5, 1992, the founding members celebrated OBA's induction into the Wayne State University Alumni Association as an affiliate under the unified membership program, making OBA the second non-college, alumni constituent group. The organization has served alumni by hosting major annual events, providing mentoring programs, honoring distinguished alumni with the prestigious OBA Achievement Award and co-sponsoring the annual Black Graduation Convocation.

For years, Wayne State University professor Dr. Kafi D. Kumasi carried a family story she new was remarkable but could not fully prove. Kumasi searched deep into archives, libraries and historical collections across Detroit, and what started as a personal genealogy project soon became a journey through generations of Black excellence, community leadership and resilience.

As Wayne State marks its annual Juneteenth holiday observance, Kumasi's experience illustrates why genealogy has become such a powerful part of the university's ongoing Juneteenth programming.
