We're proud to share what two of our SIS grads are up to in the library makerspace world.

Adam Pecar runs the DREAM Lab at Grosse Pointe Public Library's Woods Branch, teaching patrons 3D printing and other maker tech. He's also a founding member of the Guild of Library Makers, which started as a few southeastern Michigan librarians comparing notes in 2023 and has grown into a 230+ member nonprofit across about 80 library systems in the US and Germany. Alex Centala works as an adult services and makerspace librarian at St. Clair Shores Public Library and handles communications for the Guild.

Their next conference, GoLMCon, is September 18 at Southfield Public Library, with sessions on makerspace safety, Cricut programming and digital preservation.

Over the past two years, members of the Mapping Information Access research group, including Emily Knox, Shannon Oltmann, and Andy Zalot, have been interviewing public library directors to find out more about their experiences with book challenges. Several new best practices for policies and guidelines have emerged from these interviews.

Katherine Moyer started shelving books in a college library in 1997. Almost 30 years later, she's finishing her MLIS at Wayne State, still working full time. She picked Wayne State because her coworkers had done the program and told her to go for it. Online classes meant she could study from her home office in Jackson without giving up her job or her routine. Her advice for anyone thinking about it is to stop waiting and just go do it!

Monica VanTuyle spent 30 years teaching middle school English before starting a second career as a school librarian. She's now District Media Specialist for a rural school district in Lenawee County, and she's working toward her Library Media Endorsement through Wayne State's online SIS program. Her advice for anyone on the fence is to just give it a shot. The flexibility of the program made it so she could study around her family and her job instead of putting her life on hold.

Staff from the Wayne State University Libraries and School of Information Sciences has expanded Dolly Parton's Imagination Library to Southwest Detroit's 48209 and 48210 ZIP codes, thanks to a $15,000 gift from the Government Employees Health Association. Enrolled children get free books delivered every month from birth to age 5. Michigan ranks 44th in literacy in the country, and this program is step in the right direction to raise literacy rates. Families in ZIP codes 48209, 48210, 48201 and 48202 can register free at imaginationlibrary.org.
