Engineering and pageantry may seem like two different worlds, but Detroit Mercy student Grace Hanke is proving they have more in common than you might think.

The sophomore Mechanical Engineering student was recently crowned Miss Michigan 2026 and will represent the state at the Miss America competition this September.

Through her initiative, Engineer Her Future, Grace is inspiring young women to pursue careers in STEM while demonstrating the power of leadership, service and authenticity.

As a transfer student, Detroit Mercy’s Computer Science program exceeded Sara Shannan’s expectations academically.

But as a mother of young children, it was the support from faculty and staff that left the biggest impact.

“It was difficult trying to balance everything, but the professors were always understanding,” she said. “They were my community that I really needed, and I appreciate them for that.”
