From Surry County to film festivals across the country (and internationally!), SCC alum Lauren Henderson is carving out her own space in the film industry, one day at a time. 🎬

After earning her associate degree through Surry Early College High School, she went on to complete a Bachelor of Fine Arts focused in Film Producing at the UNC School of the Arts. Now working as an editor and filmmaker, Henderson has written, directed, and produced award-winning work, including her short film The Four Daniels, which has been screened at film festivals across the United States and in Greece.

Lauren mentions that she cultivated the drive to become a filmmaker at Surry. “Having a voice in the room say, ‘This is good, keep going,’ during those pivotal [teenage] years inspired me to keep creating, even when things got hard.”

Her journey — from early inspiration at SCC to professional success — reflects perseverance, creativity, and a commitment to following her passion for film.

“The cool thing about being a filmmaker is that you get to live so many different lives through the stories you tell. And when someone watches that story, or reads something I wrote, and tells me that they see themselves in it too, that’s a feeling I’ll carry with me forever. That’s truly what inspires me to create – the power of connecting with an audience through art,” says Lauren.

Surry-Yadkin Works recently celebrated 85 students accepting part-time employment, full-time employment, and apprenticeships! 🎉

This year, twenty-five registered apprentices completed their apprenticeship programs and were recognized during the 2026 Surry-Yadkin Works Job Signing Celebration. These graduates have successfully combined paid, hands-on training with classroom instruction to earn industry-recognized credentials and launch their careers. Many have accepted full-time employment with their employers, while others will continue advancing in their professions through additional education and training.

“Career signing events like this are among the most meaningful moments of the year because they celebrate the hard work, dedication, and achievements of our students. Each signing represents a student taking the next step toward a successful future, whether through employment, an apprenticeship, or continued education,” said Crystal Folger-Hawks, Executive Director of Surry-Yadkin Works, said. “We are grateful to our business partners, educators, and families who invest in these students and help create opportunities that strengthen our workforce and our communities.”
