The Station expresses our gratitude to Bill Schneider, Helen Holtz and Dan Carter and the rest of The Prairie Enthusiasts - Glacial Prairie Chapter for helping with a successful burn. Fires help keep an ecosystem health by reducing thatch and controlling controlling invasive species and woody brush, stimulating new growth and increasing biodiversity.

This information was shared by Janet Brown, a long-time supporter of the Waukesha Campus. Gertrude Sherman is the donor of the property that is now the UWM at Waukesha Field Station. Without her, there would be no field station.

"This is Gertrude Sherman at a College Endowment Association event in the ’70’s. It was at this time that the endowment of the organization which is now 135 years old was retained in Milwaukee along with the lecture series. Formerly, the CEA had been associated with Downer College where many of the women in the organization had earned degrees. I ran across this while working on a history page for the website. The original photo includes a woman who has papers in hand.

It is clear that Gertrude Sherman was interested in continuing education from her work with supporting the lecture series for women (and now also men) in Milwaukee. Her donation of the farmland, now Field Station is clearly another aspect of her regard/respect for history and the importance of providing, developing, and maintaining the land for future generations.

I know that you have other pictures of Ms. Sherman, but I quite admire this one."

As the Waukesha campus librarians are sorting through records, they happened upon this article about the fire that destroyed the shed published in The Waukesha Freemen on Feb 25, 1971. The shed once stood where the greenhouse is currently. After the fire, the greenhouse was erected on the shed's concrete slab. History is interesting!

Bio 192 Environmental Science and Ethics students participated in a lab yesterday, where they examined the water quality of Scuppernong Creek. The class is taught by Teresa Schueller and Bill Schneider. We had beautiful weather! Unfortunately, it was a bittersweet experience, as it is the last class of students from the Waukesha campus to have a field station experience since the campus is closing at the end of the month. It is our hope that educational activities will continue at the station; stay tuned for the next chapter.
