I mentioned on Monday that I had some news to share - and as we close out Shellfish Aquaculture Week, I want to announce a new chapter in our programming efforts. For the last year or two we have been working with Dr. Ed Hale at University of Delaware College of Earth, Ocean and Environment/Delaware Sea Grant to start a shellfish aquaculture demonstration farm in Rehoboth Bay that will serve as a research and education space as we work to support our burgeoning aquaculture industry.

Today was big milestone - we planted our first oysters onto the lease! Many thanks to everyone that has helped get us to this point, including Grant Blank, Brendan Campbell, Nyla Mason, Hunter Leeuwen and Dan Millea, and of course to Alyssa Campbell and Rileigh Hudock who produced the seed oysters for us to plant.

According to Aquaculture North America, today starts 'Shellfish Farming Week' (August 10-14). While I didn't try to independently verify this, I am going to run with this and post a few shellfish related things this week, as we have some exciting news to share.

Happy to announce that DSU Aquaculture and Delaware Sea Grant have partnered to offer a professional development opportunity aimed at Delaware K-12 educators. The event will be held on Saturday May 2, 2026 and will include a boat tour of a working oyster farm in Rehoboth Bay in the morning and an afternoon tour of the pilot-scale UD/DSU oyster hatchery in Lewes. DSU Farm School starts tomorrow! This year we are partnering with DE Sea Grant and focusing on shellfish aquaculture. There are a few spaces left if you are interested in becoming a shellfish farmer in Delaware and wanted to learn more about what it will take.
