The sixth principle is Kuumba (Creativity) and calls for leaving your community more beautiful and beneficial than you found it, using artistic, scientific, and innovative efforts to improve life and build a better future, rooted in African traditions of making things new and whole.

Today we celebrate Nia, or Purpose.

This principle encourages people and the community as a whole to recognize and embrace their collective vocation and goals. It’s about understanding and building upon the unique role each person plays in the community and contributing towards the collective purpose and progress.

Nia calls for a focus on community development projects and initiatives that are meaningful and have long-term benefits. It’s about considering the legacy one wants to leave and the impact of one’s actions on future generations.

Nia is also instrumental in encouraging young people to think about their future, their role in the community, and how they can contribute meaningfully.

The fourth principle, Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics), and is the commitment to the practice of shared social wealth and the work necessary to achieve it.

Ujamaa literally means familyhood and suggests a sharing of work and wealth in the manner of a family. It grows out of the fundamental communal concept that social wealth belongs to the masses of people who created it and that no one should have such an unequal amount of wealth that it gives them the capacity to impose unequal, exploitative or oppressive relations on others.

Today we celebrate Ujima, the collective commitment to active and informed togetherness on matters of common interest. It is also recognition, respect, and understanding that without collective work and struggle, progress is impossible and liberation unthinkable.

Such a commitment implies and encourages a vigorous capacity for self-criticism and self-correction which is indispensable to our strength, defense and development.

On this second day of Kwanzaa we celebrate Kujichagulia, the principle of self-determination.

Dr. Karenga says, “In a time in which occupation and oppression of countries and peoples are immorally presented as necessary and even salvational, the principle of Kujichagulia (Self-Determination) rejects this and reaffirms the right of persons and peoples to determine their own destiny and daily lives; to live in peace and security; and to flourish in freedom everywhere.”

Habari Gani?! What’s the news?! HAPPY KWANZAA!

Kwanzaa is an annual week-long cultural celebration of African American and Pan-African heritage, unity, and community, observed from December 26 to January 1. Created in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga, this non-religious holiday aims to connect African Americans with their African roots and bring together communities.

Kwanzaa is inclusive and can be celebrated by people of various faiths as a way to honor their cultural heritage, often alongside other holidays. The HOPE Center encourages everyone to meditate on the daily core principles, Nguzo Saba, which are the backbone of the holiday and serve as themes for reflection, family gatherings, and shared meals.

Today we celebrate Umoja, which means Unity!
