Ke'lab: The Arts Publication of Tompkins Cortland CC

Ke'lab: The Arts Publication of Tompkins Cortland CC Kə'lab is the arts publication of Tompkins Cortland CC. It is created in an interdisciplinary appli Its unique name comes from the word "collaborate". Shanks.

Ke'lab is Tompkins Cortland Community College's arts journal featuring creative writing, visual art, motion graphics, video, graphic and interactive design, and audio/music. Ke'lab is pronounced like "collab" [KUH] + [LAB] and its unusual logo was inspired by the pronunciation respelling of the word "collaborate" which looks like this "/kəˈlabəˌrāt/". The publication is created in an interdiscipl

inary course as a collaboration mainly between students enrolled in the Graphic Design and Creative Writing programs, however students enrolled in other college programs are welcome to apply their strengths in the course and become staff after speaking with the publication's faculty advisors. Submissions are open to the college community and include current and former students, alumni, faculty, staff, and CollegeNow concurrent enrollment highschool students. The concept of the journal is to develop a collaboration between artists and writers. When writing and art are carefully paired together or made in response to one another, a deeper experience of both can be felt by readers and viewers. These pairings come in the form of:

Ke'lab-orations between artists and writers. Pairings of writing and art submissions by the Ke'lab staff.

The publication is printed each year in May, at the end of our spring semester. The publication's first issue was created in Spring 2018. The first completely student run publication was created in a new college course during the Spring 2019 semester. Because of this special applied learning course the magazine is now produced, marketed, and managed by students who are collaborating in an interdisciplinary course devoted to ensuring the publication is created by students. This is a groundbreaking applied learning endeavor at the college. Students in the course earn valuable job-ready skills and build their resumes as they work in a professional environment; more akin to working for a real publication than a classroom. The Ke'lab website and social media also promote other creative collaborative projects at the college managed by the Ke'lab Creative Director and Chair of Graphic Design Christine J.

Ke'lab has been recognized for its excellence :-)

Our amazing student-produced literary magazine Ke'Lab has won a national award for excellence! The National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) has recognized Ke'Lab as part of a contest that drew entries from schools and higher education institutions in 46 states and five countries.
The publication is the product of an innovative cross-discipline class that includes the Art and Creative Writing programs at TC3. Professors Christine Shanks and Darlene Gold created Ke'Lab back in 2018 and it has grown and gotten better each year. Congratulations to everyone involved! 👏 🏆

Stop by Grayhaven on Friday, Decmber 6th from 5 to 8 p.m. for “Fragments of Identity”, an installation that brings together the diverse artistic voices of Tompkins Cortland Community College faculty, students, and tutors. The exhibition explores the concept of identity through a variety of media—cross-contour drawings that capture the tactile essence of human form, portraits that tell personal stories, and fragmented digital works that reflect the layered nature of our digital age. We can't wait!

Meet Christine Shanks, Professor of Graphic Design at TC3, the powerhouse behind TC3's revitalized Graphic Design program!
After leaving a tenured position at an art college in search of a more meaningful educational mission, Christine found her home at Tompkins Cortland Community College. “I believe in the mission of community colleges to provide exceptional education and support for a reasonable cost to their students,” she shared.
Since arriving, Christine has taken a “blank slate” program and turned it into
a dynamic, career-focused curriculum designed to prepare students for the evolving graphic design field. 👏
