Honoring our heritage while building for the future, shaping lives, and strengthening communities💙

Demolition of Smith Hall began this week and is expected to continue through early July. Construction of the new Chlapaty Center for Innovation – a transformative project that will enhance opportunities for teaching, learning, collaboration, and community engagement – will follow immediately afterward.

Built in 1956, Smith Hall was originally a seminary residence hall and then an undergraduate residence hall before being used for a variety of offices and departments over the years.

The Chlapaty Center for Innovation is anticipated to open fall 2027.

Even in its last days, Smith Hall continues to serve đŸ€©

Soon it will be gone, but not before helping the Dubuque Fire Department train, prepare, and protect. Within walls full of history, new stories are being written; because the space is unfamiliar to firefighters, it provides a valuable opportunity to strengthen their skills and better prepare them for when Dubuque residents need help.

Fall 2026 brings new horizons—this time, from the skies 🚁

will offer a new associate of applied science in flight operations (rotary wing). Approved by the Higher Learning Commission, this two-year program is designed to provide aspiring helicopter pilots with a streamlined collegiate flight training experience—focused on building the skills and real-world experience needed to launch their careers.

This new helicopter pilot pathway comes as part of a significant expansion of the Edward Babka Aviation Learning Center, including the addition of a new helicopter simulator to further enhance hands-on learning during the 2026–2027 academic year.

From spending time on the Guttenberg Golf Course in middle school to winning the 2026 A-R-C individual conference title, breaking championship records, and earning NCAA Division III PING All-Region honors for the second straight year in college, Luke Harwick - along with his teammates - were ready to play at the 2026 NCAA Division III Men’s Golf Championship starting today.

“I loved hitting hundreds of range balls a day. The greenskeeper kicked me off the range sometimes for tearing it up too much. Some of my favorite memories are when an old timer would pick me up in his golf cart and let me play with them, because I was too young to drive a golf cart." Luke Harwick, a sophomore business major.

As the proposed John and Alice Butler College of Osteopathic Medicine continues its planning and preparation, construction is underway at 500 Main Street—the future home of the new college—with progress on track to welcome its first cohort in summer 2028.

We look forward to preparing future physicians to prioritize compassionate care, meet the needs of their patients, and stay deeply connected to the communities they serve.
