This… this was the Exit Gallery in September. While we can’t fully recreate the wonder of moving amidst intricate hanging sculptures, we gave a virtual walkthrough our best shot. The show was created by students in Professor Jay Dougan’s 3D Design classes.

FYI, a new exhibition featuring collages by Ecuadorian artist Beto Val just opened and runs through October 14, 2026. Stop by Art & Design Hall daily 7 am to 10 pm to check it out.

Magical things are underway in Professor Amy Wendland’s “Plants, Place, and Pigments” class, where students are learning to sustainably harvest botanicals and minerals for paints, inks, and more. We can’t wait to see how students unleash their creativity with this amazing process!

How have we gotten two weeks into the semester without a welcome back? Our only excuse is that it’s been a busy, busy start to Fall 2026, including welcoming our new Communication Design professor Seth Ferris and opening the Faculty Biennial exhibition! There’s a lot more to come, and you don’t have to lurk outside the window to see what’s up (sorry deer). Follow us here for updates on all the supercool goings on at FLC Art & Design!

Art & Design students Alicia Hansen, Nasira Lambert, and Colter Niendorf presented projects at yesterday’s Undergraduate Research Spring Symposium. 📝 All three shared posters on their scholarly work, and Colter and Alicia also gave oral presentations. Pictured is Nasira with her poster on Design Thinking.

Congratulations, y’all! We are so proud of you!

Do you ever look at visual art and think it feels almost musical 🎶 🖼️? You’re not wrong! Take these pieces from Professor Amy Wendland’s 2D Design classes. Amy played songs she knew were likely to be unfamiliar, and students doodled while listening. Afterward, they selected one of their doodles to refine, tessellate, and repeat 16 times to form a pattern. The use of color harmonies augmented the feeling of visual rhythm. The result? Beautiful music!

Artists in order pictured are Mason Kaskela, Ruby Romero, Nathan Martin, Imi Gross, Jo Vallecorsa-Campo, Alan Villalobos, Aria Reyes, Sammie Shapiro, Tristan Dickey, and Achilles Silas.

Student social media assistant Tyler Suazo recently shared images of Professor Tony Holmquist’s Printmaking class, where they’ve been making reductive relief prints. Reductive reliefs involve successively removing parts of a wood or linoleum block in order to print different colors. Getting it right requires careful planning!

Pictured in order are Amelia showing off a design, Henry performing an image transfer, Ginger measuring artwork, and Tony himself explaining how to use fixative on a successful transfer. We can’t wait to see the final results, everyone! 🤩

Things got wonderfully weird in Professor Jay Dougan’s 3D Design class when students made thumb tacks… literally. Each student dipped their thumb in wax, carefully wiggled off the hardened shell, and poured rubber into the cavity. Once the rubber cured, they glued in points so the “thumbs” function like pushpins. It’s one part kitsch, one part serial killer, and 100% awesome! Talk about the perfect way to refresh some playful energy at the end of the semester!

Of course… there’s only one proper emoji for this... 👍👍👍
