The Hart Leadership Program regularly transforms students’ lives. Take Jeffrey Broms. Public policy wasn’t really on Jeffrey’s radar; he was studying physics and music. He is a principle double bassist for Duke’s Symphony Orchestra among other roles. But Jeffrey applied and was accepted into Hart’s Leadership in Arts Policy Internship (LAPI). The program was the ticket to Washington, D.C., for the summer via a funded internship at the Kennedy Center. “Hart was really a gateway to new experiences in the arts management, arts administration (which is) really what I like to do,” he says. Jeffrey now works for Duke Arts and hopes to continue in nonprofit management and the arts, thanks in part to his connection to Hart.

“Look, the single most important thing that we could do is, the fact of the matter is, some tech CEOs need to go to jail. We need to have criminal provisions in place that if we have CEOs that are fraudulently representing that they are running risk management exercises (and) that are making decisions that are putting all of humanity at risk, we need to have a legal system that's put in place that has requirements for them to make representations that they are behaving responsibly.”

David Hoffman, professor of the practice of cybersecurity at the Duke Sanford School of Public Policy, shares his thoughts about what safeguard policies should be in place when it comes to tech executives in the world of agentic AI. He also discusses how his classroom teaching methods have changed in the age of AI.

“Recently, we've heard in the news that AI might have over a 10% chance of wiping out all of humanity. And with that, I think a lot of people are asking the question, what should government be doing to control that risk and to guide the way AI is being developed right now?”

David Hoffman, professor of the practice of cybersecurity at Duke Sanford, shares his thoughts about AI policies, AI agents “going rogue,” and what potential policy actions could keep people safe.

From theater kid to a role in state government, Sophie Yost found opportunities to connect her interests through the Hart Leadership Program.

Through the Leadership in Arts Policy Internship (LAPI), she interned at the Hollywood Art and Culture Center in Florida. The following year, the Patman Political Engagement Project took her home to Pennsylvania, where she worked as a constituent affairs intern in Governor Josh Shapiro’s office.

“I realized that I have a big passion working for the state government which is something I never would have had the opportunity to discover without the Hart Leadership Program,” she shares.

Todau, Sophie serves as Special Assistant to the Policy Office at the Office of Governor Shapiro.

As a nationally recognized trial lawyer, Barry Berke PPS'86, co-chair of Gibson Dunn’s Litigation Practice Group, is a member of Sanford’s Board of Visitors. He served as counsel in two presidential impeachments and has chaired the Coalition for the Homeless board of directors for nearly 20 years. As the Hart Leadership Program celebrates its 40th anniversary, Berke reflects on helping with the program's launch as a Duke undergraduate and how Sanford shaped his commitment to public service.
