Last Friday, seminarians, scholars, and students from multiple institutions across the U.S. South came together, both in-person and online, for a panel on “Race, Religion, & Migration in the US South”, in commemoration of the 5th anniversary of the Atlanta spa shootings.
The panel began with a ritual to remember and honor the victims, followed by Dr. Helen Kim (Emory) reading "Our Mothers" by Lucy Chuang. Dr. Matthew Lai (University of South Carolina) and Dr. Carolyn Chen (UC Berkeley) then offered a welcome and introduction. Insights were shared by Dr. Khyati Joshi (Fairleigh Dickinson University), Dr. Girim Jung (Wesleyan College), Victoria Shen (Emory), and Dr. Jonathan (Cat) Tran (Duke), with Dr. Eleanor Craig (Emory University) serving as the respondent and Dr. Lai and Dr. Kim guiding a group discussion. The panel concluded with Dr. Jung Choi (Duke) reading "Atlanta Arirang" from Sky Ladders (2023) by Ethan Chua.
Thank you to everyone who joined, and to all who helped make this panel possible. We are so grateful to our co-hosts - APARRI (Asian Pacific American Religions Research Initiative), Emory’s Candler School of Theology, the University of South Carolina, and the Asian House of Studies at Duke Divinity School - for supporting this conversation.
