The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded $30 million over five years to a consortium of universities to establish a new center aimed at uncovering a hidden layer of information within the human genome.

Duke University researchers will join the multi-institutional team working to understand how the genome’s 3D structure helps cells establish their identities, remember past experiences and respond to their environments.

Whenever someone asks Duke University junior Elisa Torres Durney what Girls in Quantum is, "I can stay there and talk for hours," she says. "That’s what I love."

Since 2022, she's connected students in 68 countries with free, multilingual resources on quantum science. Her advocacy for accessible STEM education has reached leaders across the globe from stages belonging to the United Nations and UNESCO all while pursuing her degree in electrical and computer engineering.

"Whether its the Duke Quantum Center, which is doing amazing things, or research that some of my professors are doing, I’m really interested in exploring all the things that are happening here at Duke."

To best prepare students for the latest innovations in their field, some courses at never look the same twice.

That's true for ECE 512, which gives students in the Pierre R. Lamond Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering an up-to-date look at emerging semiconductor device technologies.

“It is a dive into a very cutting-edge space," said Aaron Franklin, who has been leading and revising the course since 2014. “The goal is to provide students with an understanding of the latest developments in semiconductor technology and enough conceptual mastery to be able to track and understand exploratory work that’s happening and what could come in the future.”
