This is not your average internship. This summer, three UNH students traversed 5,800+ nautical miles in the Atlantic Ocean to test the waters – literally! – of a career in marine science. ⛴️

Orla Fogarty ’29, Grace Bemis ’26, and grad student Amelea Hauer joined NOAA's East Coast Ocean Acidification Cruise aboard the R/V Henry Bigelow this summer, helping collect critical ocean acidification data from the Gulf of St. Lawrence in Canada down to Miami. The experience offered a front-row seat to scientific discovery and future jobs in marine science.

Fogarty says, “As a first internship, this was an amazing opportunity and showed me what a cruise job looks like for a scientist. I learned how to constructively work and collaborate on a vessel with multiple scientists from several different universities and backgrounds, and I learned how the scientific processes adjust to a moving ship environment.”

And she didn’t even get seasick.

Snow drives a multi-billion dollar winter recreation economy in northern New England, yet researchers and forecasters don’t have the nuanced, sophisticated snow and precipitation data the winter sports industry — and others — needs to thrive. ⛷️🏂

That’s about to change. UNH researchers are partners in a new project that will install snow monitoring equipment in the mountains of Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Called Snow STORE (Science and Technology for Operations, Research, and Economic Development in Northern New England), it’s the first monitoring system of its kind in the northeast, funded with a $2.6 million National Science Foundation grant to UNH. ❄️

“Our goal is to look the impact of snow on our mountains, how it is changing, its effect on weather and flooding, and the science behind our changing snow,” says UNH principal investigator Elizabeth Burakowski, research associate professor in the Institute for the Study of Earth, Oceans, and Space. “Typically, snow measurements are taken by hand; these new automated monitors will allow for more comprehensive and continuous measurements to gain a better understanding of change, provide data and a dashboard, and help forecast a wide variety of activity with our rivers, forests, and overall flooding incidents.” 🏔️

Because weather doesn’t stop at state lines, UNH will collaborate with the universities of Vermont and Maine, as well as with other academic, scientific, recreation, and industry organizations across northern New England.

Twenty minutes, three times a week. That's the dose of nature Lindsey Pawlowski has been studying.

Lindsey, a direct entry master of nursing student at UNH, spent her year researching whether short, regular walks in the woods can ease anxiety and depression and help people feel more connected to their community.

Participants spent 20 minutes at a time in UNH's College Woods. Early results suggest that small dose may be enough to make a real difference.

Her curiosity about this topic has roots in her own life. She calls herself an avid outdoorswoman who has felt firsthand how a walk in the woods can help calm her down.

Additionally, she once worked with an emergency department physician who, as part of his discharge process, would recommend patients spend time in the sun, citing its benefits for overall wellness. It was a good instinct, she said, but one that needed more supporting evidence. That gap is part of what pushed her to help build something more concrete: an actual, evidence-based recommendation, down to the minutes, that providers could prescribe their patients.
