"I chose Paul twice: once to find my place, and once because I had found it."

Meet Merlim Llanes: A University of New Hampshire graduate student (and '25 undergrad!) from Havana, Cuba, who will receive her MS degree in Economics tomorrow.

When she's not in class, you can find her:

πŸ‘©β€πŸ« Supporting students as a Teaching Assistant
πŸŽ“ Representing and advocating for peers as the MS Economics Program Ambassador
πŸ“ˆ Diving deeper into econometrics and macroeconomic consulting

"I grew up in a place where the government decided what people could buy, produce, and sell,” says Merlim, reflecting on her childhood in Cuba. β€œLater, living in the United States, I experienced a completely different kind of economy β€” one that was open, fast, and full of opportunities."

Experiencing both worlds made her curious, and that curiosity led her to Economics.

"Economics gives me the tools to connect what I have lived with what I can change through research and analysis," says Merlim. "It is not only my field of study. It is how I make sense of my journey."

She first transferred to UNH from Miami Dade College, then, after earning her B.S. in Analytical Economics, she chose Paul again for graduate school.

The courses that made her feel like a true economist? Advanced Econometrics, which sparked a love for empirical research, and Macroeconomic Consulting with Professor Goldberg, where she sat at a table discussing Federal Reserve decisions and inflation updates like the professional she was becoming.

Then came PSG's Elite Series. She traveled to host sites, competed in front of real professionals, and won the UNH Speed Sell competition in 2024. "Before PSG, I was a completely different person."

Now as Merlim approaches graduation, she knows how much she’ll miss UNH:

β€œThere is something special about the air here; it feels purer, almost magical. Every time I move through campus, I am reminded of how much I love this place and how grateful I am to be part of it.”

Please join us in congratulating Merlim and all of the other graduate students who will receive their degrees tomorrow! πŸ‘

A huge congratulations to this year's Internship Opportunity Fund (IOF) awardees, who will be representing Paul College and the University of New Hampshire nationwide this summer!

With stipends up to $2,500, the IOF empowers Paul College students to pursue impactful, hands-on internship experiences that may otherwise be out of reach.

From local legends like the Boston Red Sox, to national brands like Coca-Cola Beverages Northeast, to top-tier spots at PWC and Ernst & Young, these students are doing it all this summer.

These internships give students invaluable workplace experience and allow them to apply what they've learned in the classroom to the real world. But none of this would be possible without our incredible alumni, advisory board members, and supporters who generously fund the IOF.

Congratulations to the recipients! We can't wait to share some of your adventures later this summer! 🌍

Did you know that every single one of our first-years participates in the UNH FIRE Undergraduate Research Conference (URC)?

That’s over 500 first-year students getting involved in hands-on research from day one!

Congratulations to Team 20, "20/20 Vision," who took home the win with their product SoyFlo. πŸ† Special congrats to these students and to their peer advisor, Jackson Ragonese, for guiding them throughout the process this year.

Within weeks of arriving on campus every first year student team is assigned a real-world problem to tackle via a viable business plan. They spend the entire year working together to do research, write a business plan, and develop their presentations – all things that help them get accustomed to college (and professional) life!

The culmination of these efforts is this dynamic, full-day conference where projects are scrutinized by a discerning panel of faculty, alumni, and peers.

But what makes FIRE so special isn't just the research itself, but the community it builds. Guided by peer advisors who've been in their shoes, our first-years form lasting connections while gaining confidence in their abilities. The program creates a supportive environment where students can take risks, learn from setbacks, and celebrate wins together.

Congratulations to all the students who participated in their very first URC this past weekend. We can’t wait to see what other great things you do during your time here at Paul!
