📚 An Evening with Amy Laura Hall 📚

We're excited to share this event featuring GLS professor Amy Laura Hall! Professor Hall has taught multiple seminars here at Graduate Liberal Studies, including War, Myth, and Masculinity in the U.S., a course that speaks directly to the themes explored in her new book.

Golden Fig Books in Carrboro is hosting Amy Laura Hall this Thursday, September 10th at 6PM in conversation with Misha Angrist, celebrating the release of Erecting the Pulpit: Muscular Christianity from Teddy Roosevelt to Donald Trump.

The book traces how faith, masculinity, and political power became intertwined in modern America.

GLS ON THE TRAIL 🌲

Last Saturday, our GLS community headed to Occoneechee Mountain State Natural Area for our welcome hike. It was such a great way to meet new faces, catch up along the shaded trails, and kick off the fall semester feeling completely refreshed and recharged. 🥾✨

This past weekend, members of the GLS community traveled to Asheville, North Carolina, for the 2026 Hidden Histories trip.

The Hidden Histories initiative engages the GLS community in investigating and presenting histories often obscured within settler-colonial narratives. Through place-based learning, participants explore diverse perspectives, elevate underrepresented voices, and deepen their understanding of the past through a more equitable and antiracist lens.

Over three days, participants explored Asheville's Black Cultural Heritage Trail, learned about Cherokee history and culture through visits to the Oconaluftee Visitor Center, Mountain Farm Museum, Museum of the Cherokee People, Qualla Arts and Crafts Mutual, and Oconaluftee Indian Village, and examined the history and legacy of the Blue Ridge Parkway and Black Mountain College.

Thank you to the organizations, educators, and community members who shared their knowledge and helped make this year's journey possible.

This June, Duke GLS students are heading to Asheville for another Hidden History Discover Trip! 🔍

✨ About the Project:
This amazing initiative was started by '23-24 MALS students with help from a Duke GPSG mini-grant and the Lottie Applewhite Fund.

The purpose of this initiative is to engage the GLS community in the investigation and presentation of histories buried within settler-colonial narratives.

Students select their own texts, conduct on-site fieldwork, and bring their findings back to the community.

A single object can embody history, art, politics, and memory all at once. Learning to navigate that complexity? That is a museum skill. It is also the core of GLS.

Conversations over coffee, photographs spread across tables, ideas taking shape.

In American Spaces, students examined the visual history of the United States through photography, exploring how images construct meaning, memory and identity. Through photography theory, visual analysis and critical discussion, the course considered what photographs can reveal and obscure about “Americanness.”

The seminar culminated in student cultural portfolios that interpreted American space, history and culture through photography.

The course was taught by John Bechtold, an alumnus of Duke Graduate Liberal Studies.
