In case you missed it in this week’s Duke Notes, Duke Music has welcomed three new Ambassadors to the team! Joining Mills Howell and John Critelli are Calvin Chen, Yasmine Kwong, and Michael Song!

Our five Ambassadors bring a variety of musical experiences, academic interests, and perspectives to the Department of Music. From performance and composition to interdisciplinary studies and community engagement, each has a unique story to share about making music at Duke.

Join us this Friday for Sampling for Black Life, a thought-provoking conversation exploring the ethics of music sampling, the preservation of Black voices, and the power of sound to challenge exploitation and amplify Black histories.
 
Ethnomusicologist Allie Martin, joined by composer Brittany Green as discussant, will explore how archival recordings can be approached with care, intention, and a commitment to liberation.

The Ciompi String Quartet—one of the world’s most enduring active string quartets—has made Duke its home, bringing together performance, teaching, mentorship, and a commitment to the creation of music.

CIOMPI: A WEB SERIES is a new seven-part series exploring the people, music, history, and mission of the Ciompi Quartet.

From the concert stage to the classroom, from working with students to commissioning new works, the series offers an intimate look at what it means to be a professional string quartet in residence at a major university.

Duke Opera Theater takes the stage alongside Duke Music faculty for an evening packed with drama, comedy, romance, and some seriously unforgettable music.
 
Hear scenes and ensembles from Carmen, Don Giovanni, The Magic Flute, The Marriage of Figaro, Die Fledermaus, The Merry Widow, On the Town, West Side Story and more — with every ensemble selection performed in English.
 
Featuring Duke Music faculty Ted Federle, Andrea Edith Moore, Elizabeth Linnartz, and Clara Rottsolk alongside 14 Duke student performers, with Daniel Seyfried at the piano.
