Duke Bass Connections

Duke Bass Connections Bass Connections brings together Duke faculty and students to explore real-world issues in teams.

Today’s challenges demand collaborative solutions from teams whose members come from diverse backgrounds. Companies, governments, and organizations are looking for graduates with training and experience tackling complex issues. Through Bass Connections, Duke is channelling its unique culture of collaboration, its ambitious entrepreneurial spirit, and established record of applying classroom learni

ng to pressing global problems, to create a distinctive new model for education. Bass Connections is a university-wide initiative launched by a $50 million gift from Anne and Robert Bass. Bass Connections provides students with greater exposure to inquiry across the disciplines, partnership with unlikely fellow thinkers, sustained mentorship in teams, and the chance to experience the intersections of the academy and the broader world. Since fall 2013, students have been pursuing problem-focused educational pathways and participate in interdisciplinary project teams in five initial thematic areas:

Brain & Society
Information, Society & Culture
Global Health
Energy
Education & Human Development

Lots of people will use physiotherapy in their lives. But can you imagine learning how to function again after brain surgery? Many patients around the world face that challenge, and continuing to receive care after discharge can be crucial to their success.

Members of a Bass Connections team just returned from Uganda, where they worked with their collaborators at Mbarara University of Science and Technology to research physiotherapy care plans for patients leaving the hospital after neurosurgery. They also took in some gorgeous views!
