Congratulations to Chad Perry ‘07 on his reappointment as North Carolina chief special counsel by the Indigent Defense Services (IDS) Commission for a new four-year term.

IDS Commission Chair Bryan Jones praised Perry’s “leadership, legal expertise and commitment to justice, service and compassion” in serving individuals facing involuntary commitment.
Perry has led the office since his initial appointment four years ago. Before becoming chief special counsel, he served eight years as an assistant public defender in Durham County.

He previously served as a senior attorney adviser for the Office of the Inspector General in Washington, D.C., and as an attorney adviser for the Social Security Administration’s Appeals Council in Crystal City, Virginia.

Hosted by the North Carolina Association of Public Defenders, NCCU, the Justice Institute, and the George H. White Bar Association, this event will reflect on the struggles, triumphs, and contributions of Black legal pioneers who helped advance justice, equality, and constitutional rights across our state.

More than 25 years ago, four young women met at North Carolina Central University School of Law, never imagining how important they would become to one another’s journeys and success.

Today, Judge Keisha Wright-Hill ’02, Judge Shamieka Rhinehart ‘01, Judge Camille Banks-Prince ‘01 and Judge Teresa Raquel Robinson-Freeman ’01 are leading with purpose and helping shape the judiciary through their service and leadership.

Their bond, impact and commitment to justice were recently highlighted in a Spectrum News feature celebrating the influence of NCCU Law alumni on and beyond the bench. More than 170 NCCU Law alumni currently serve as judges, continuing a proud legacy of leadership and advocacy. ⚖️🦅

How can technology expand access to justice? ⚖️💻

graduate Aminah Ghaffar and Amyah Solomon (3L) recently shared how their work with the Legal Aid of North Carolina Innovation Lab is helping bridge gaps in legal services through technology, AI and community outreach.

Through the NCCU Technology Law & Policy Center externship, the 2026 graduates gained hands-on experience testing housing document automation tools, contributing to the LIA AI platform and participating in Lawyers at the Library helping connect underserved communities with legal information and support.

A longtime public servant and member of the judiciary, Judge Parker’s appointment reflects NCCU Law’s impact on the bench and in the legal profession. More than 170 NCCU Law alumni serve as judges across North Carolina.

89 graduates crossed the stage during the Hooding Ceremony at King’s Park International Church. Congratulations to our newest School of Law alumni as they begin their next chapter.

The keynote address was delivered by Attorney Preston D. Mitchum ’11, and Judge Ashleigh Parker ’12 administered the alumni oath.
