Sonic Connexions is a series of online meetups, organized by the Technical Committee on Animal Bioacoustics of the Acoustical Society of America, designed for casual conversations about animal bioacoustics. The University of New Hampshire is building satellites to better study and predict space weather. We have taken events, as well as the satellites, instruments, and data we use to study it, and put them into a Space Station in Virtual Reality for all to enjoy.

Snow drives a multi-billion dollar winter recreation economy in northern New England, yet researchers and forecasters don’t have the nuanced, sophisticated snow and precipitation data the winter sports industry — and others — needs to thrive. ⛷️🏂

That’s about to change. UNH researchers are partners in a new project that will install snow monitoring equipment in the mountains of Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Called Snow STORE (Science and Technology for Operations, Research, and Economic Development in Northern New England), it’s the first monitoring system of its kind in the northeast, funded with a $2.6 million National Science Foundation grant to UNH. ❄️

“Our goal is to look the impact of snow on our mountains, how it is changing, its effect on weather and flooding, and the science behind our changing snow,” says UNH principal investigator Elizabeth Burakowski, research associate professor in the Institute for the Study of Earth, Oceans, and Space. “Typically, snow measurements are taken by hand; these new automated monitors will allow for more comprehensive and continuous measurements to gain a better understanding of change, provide data and a dashboard, and help forecast a wide variety of activity with our rivers, forests, and overall flooding incidents.” 🏔️

Because weather doesn’t stop at state lines, UNH will collaborate with the universities of Vermont and Maine, as well as with other academic, scientific, recreation, and industry organizations across northern New England.

: Last month, University of New Hampshire signed a partnership agreement with Space Hub Yorkshire to strengthen collaboration in , innovation, and skills development.

This partnership will:
🌔 Explore opportunities to develop collaborative research projects
🌔 Organize joint academic events including conferences, seminars and workshops
🌔 Facilitate exchanges of researchers and students
🌔 Work together to promote STEM education and develop future-focused skills programs.

“UNH has a deep and growing connection to space and aerospace research and industry here in New Hampshire and New England,” says Jennifer Miksis-Olds, vice president for research and innovation, who signed the agreement. “I look forward to extending opportunities for our students, researchers, and industry partners with Space Hub Yorkshire.”
