We are excited to announce this Wednesday's Space Science Center on Oct. 21, the first in a series of three IMAP - Interstellar Mapping and Acceleration Probe presentations.

The two speakers include Dr. Mitchell M. Shen of Princeton University for "Low Energy Ribbon and Globally Distributed Flux from First Energetic Neutral Atom Observations by IMAP-Lo." The second is Dr. Hafijul Islam from the University of New Hampshire entitled, "Direct Observation of Interstellar Neutral Helium by IMAP-Lo reveals Local Interstellar Medium Condition."

University of New Hampshire EOS director and professor of biochemistry, Dr. Ruth Varner, traveled to , Sweden to check in on the long-term site, making automated measurements of methane and carbon dioxide emissions from Stordalen Mire, a thawing peatland. 🏚🗻🌌

The research instrument shack was recently built to replace the former shack that had to be relocated because of the collapsing permafrost surface. Dr. Varner's research at this site began over 17 years ago and has been supported by grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF), U.S. Department of Energy, NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the Heising-Simons Foundation.

New Hampshire Agricultural Experiment Station researchers at the University of New Hampshire are measuring how water characteristics and quality, both in and along rivers and estuaries, are directly affected by man- and nature-made changes to surrounding landscapes and infrastructure. 🌊🪵🦫

“It’s unusual to be able to measure streams before and after significant restoration events,” says Station scientist Wilfred Wollheim, the Josephine A. Lamprey Professor in Climate and Sustainability and professor in the department of natural resources and the environment and Earth Systems Research Center. “The data we’re collecting before and after human-made dam removal, beaver dam construction, and our own restoration project will provide insights that are relevant throughout New Hampshire.”

Wollheim, who also co-directs the Water Systems Analysis Group, is leading the studies. The research focuses on comparing water quality before and after the removal of the Mill Pond Dam in , understanding the impacts of restoring a currently buried stretch of College Brook on the UNH campus, and measuring the effects of a new beaver dam built at a formerly flowing stream site that has been monitored for a quarter century.

University of New Hampshire researchers Jenna Hare, Kaan Cav, and Anthony Lyons recently published an article in the JASA Express Letters and a figure from the paper has been chosen to be the cover for the September issue of JASA-EL!

This paper presents measurements on the scattering of sound from a sandy seafloor in the Gulf of Maine over 8 months. Results show that the scattering strength varies significantly, likely due to a combination of hydrodynamic and biological activity. This research helps increase our understanding of the interaction of sound with the seafloor, which is important for many purposes including seafloor classification, habitat mapping or object detection.
