Duke is a partner institution of the US Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), a huge and diverse research center located in eastern Tennessee near Knoxville. Its mission is incredibly diverse: biology and the environment, clean energy including fission and fusion, isotope production, basic physical sciences, national security in multiple contexts, neutron sciences, and supercomputing.

William Jenks of ORNL’s Office of Research Education will be visiting Duke to host an information session about ORNL’s many opportunities for summer internships and other student programs aimed at undergraduates and recent graduates. He will provide more information to our students about opportunities to interview with potential mentors for priority placement and funding for Summer 2027, as one of their partner institutions. We are hosting this event in collaboration with the Pratt School of Engineering.

Fall 2026 URS Assistantship Applications are now temporarily open.

We have a very limited amount of funding remaining for this semester, and we expect funds to be awarded quickly. Applications will be reviewed and funded on a first-come, first-served basis, so students interested in applying should submit as soon as possible.

Please remember that your application is not considered complete until your mentor submits their endorsement form. Mentors receive an automated email with instructions after you submit your application, and endorsements should be completed within 3 days of application submission.

Because funding is limited, not all completed applications are guaranteed funding.

For details and to apply, visit: https://undergraduateresearch.duke.edu/urs-assistantships
