Why has trust in American elections fallen so sharply? On Monday, the Leaders in Law speaker series welcomed Richard Pildes, Sudler Family Professor of Constitutional Law at NYU School of Law and a nationally recognized authority on election law.

He spoke with our community about the Voting Rights Act, redistricting, and the legal questions surrounding the midterms. In this clip, he reflects on why today’s anxiety over election integrity feels unlike anything he expected to see in his career.

Registration is now open for the 6th Annual Gender + Sexuality Moot Court Competition! Register your team before December 7, 2026! Teams will write an appellate brief on a current legal topic and present oral argument on a current legal topic focusing on sexuality, gender, and the law!

The MSU Animal Law Program is hosting Animals in Wrong Places: Law Society and the Right of Place on Thursday, November 5, 2026, as part of the 2026 New Legal Perspectives Series.

This multidisciplinary program brings together scholars, practitioners, and advocates to examine where animals are allowed to be and the conditions in which they live, from non-native wildlife to companion animals affected by housing, domestic violence, and immigration policies to animals raised in industrial settings. Sessions will consider how the law responds to changing societal views and scientific understandings of animals, and whether competing interests can be addressed in ways that give animals more opportunities to thrive.

Join us Thursday, Nov. 5, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Castle Boardroom at MSU College of Law, or join virtually via Zoom.

Happy Indigenous Peoples’ Day!

Today we’re celebrating Indigenous communities, and the students and lawyers carrying their work forward. Our Indigenous Law & Policy Center educates law students and trains lawyers ready to work on behalf of tribes across the country, whether in tribal government, private firms, or nonprofits.

From the Certificate Program to NALSA moot court teams to an annual conference on tribal sovereignty and self-determination, we’re proud of this community and grateful for everything it brings to MSU Law.

MSU College of Law is proud to continue the Leaders in Law speaker series with a visit from Richard Pildes, a nationally recognized authority on democracy, elections, and political polarization. A former law clerk to Justice Thurgood Marshall, Pildes has argued voting rights cases before the U.S. Supreme Court and will speak on American democracy on the eve of the midterms, offering timely insight into the Voting Rights Act and the legal questions shaping the upcoming election.

The event takes place Monday, October 12, 2026, at 12:15 PM in the Castle Boardroom.

MSU Law's Leaders in Law series launched this fall to mark America's 250th anniversary, bringing the nation's leading legal thinkers to campus. In September, ACLU National Legal Director Cecillia Wang opened the series with a look inside her recent Supreme Court work.

On October 12, the series continues with Professor Richard Pildes of NYU School of Law, one of the country's foremost experts on election law, for a conversation on American democracy on the eve of the midterms
