MSU Law alumnus Ryan J. Clarkson ('05) and Shireen M. Clarkson of Clarkson Law Firm, P.C. have given $200,000 to launch the College of Law's new Leaders in Law series, kicking off today with Cecillia Wang. The series will bring four prominent legal thinkers to campus this academic year to explore constitutional democracy, civil rights, election law, and the rule of law.

"I hope a student walks into one of these events thinking about law school primarily as a path to a job," Clarkson said, "and walks out thinking about the kind of lawyer and leader they want to become."

The Uniform Law Commission has approved the Uniform State Indian Child Welfare Act, the first major effort to update ICWA's 1978 standards for today's legal practice. Kathryn Fort, director of MSU Law's Indian Law Clinic, served as reporter for the drafting committee, leading a four-year process to reorganize and strengthen protections for Native children and families. In this Ask the Expert conversation, Fort discusses what the Act changes, how it supports states without their own ICWA laws, and what she hopes comes next.
